Diabetes signs and symptoms result when one of several things happens with the production of insulin. In type 1 diabetes the production stops. In type 2 it is believed that either not enough is produced, or what is produced is now ignored. Insulin itself is a hormone that is necessary for the body to convert sugar to energy. Gestational diabetes is totally different, a woman may not have had high blood sugars before pregnancy, and may not have them following pregnancy, but in about 4% of pregnant women it does occur.

There are diabetes signs and symptoms that are typical to both type 1 and type 2, these are:

1. Frequent urination

2. Increased thirst

3. Increased hunger

4. Unexplained weight loss

5. Fatigue and irritability

The following are diabetes signs and symptoms that are connected most often with type 2:

6. Frequent infections

7. Blurred vision

8. Cuts and/or bruises that are slow to heal

9. Tingling and/or numbness in the hands and/or feet

10. Recurring infections

About 8 percent of the U.S. population has diabetes and almost 6 million do not know it. Type 1 makes up 5 to 10 percent of those with diabetes and the remaining 90 to 95 percent are type 2. Of those with type 2, some can be reduced by taking preventive steps. This can be achieved through improving your healthy lifestyle. You will need to improve your diet, increase your exercise and maintain a healthy weight. All of these diabetes signs and symptoms are important to recognize early and get diagnosed so you can take steps to prevent complications. We will get more into the complications in later posts.
