Diabetes can be described as a metabolic disorder for which there is no absolute cure available. Diabetes treatment is all about modifying one's lifestyle for the better management of the disorder. This article contains 5 ways which any diabetes patient can follow to perfectly manage his or her life and live a peaceful and normal life despite having the disorder.

• It is very important to control your weight because the occurrence of diabetes is mostly over weighted people. Exercise must be done on daily basis such as walking, swimming or running in order keep your weight up to a safe level.

• Avoiding both smoking and drinking. Tobacco is strictly not at all allowed for diabetes patients whereas if there is some lust for drinking then it should never be done with an empty stomach. Still drinking should also be done with moderation.

• Healthy eating is very important for diabetes patients, therefore spicy and sweet dishes must be avoided and focus should always be on fruits and vegetables. Every time you eat, try to make it into smaller pieces instead of big meals.

• Stress management is one of the most important things, diabetes patients should focus on, if they are looking to have a cutting edge diabetes treatment because stress can highly affect the levels of blood sugar and secretion of insulin.

• Taking medication in a timely manner is vital for people suffering with diabetes. If you are undergoing some home cures or natural remedies, you should still keep a regular contact with your doctor in order to keep on discussing about the types and times of your dosages.

By adopting this healthy lifestyle, you can have a perfect and timely diabetes treatment.

Diabetes is a serious condition caused by the inability of the pancreas to produce insulin or to use insulin produced in the proper way. This is the 7th leading cause of death among Americans and according to statistics over 15 million Americans suffer from diabetes. After a meal, a portion of the food that a person eats, it will be broken down into sugar then passes into the blood stream and to the body's cells via a hormone called insulin that is produced by the pancreas. The pancreas is the one that produce the right amount of insulin to accommodate the quantity of sugar.

However, if the person has diabetes, either the pancreas produces little or no insulin or the cells do not respond normally to the insulin. Sugar builds up in the blood, overflows into the urine and then passes from the body unused.

High blood sugars can the damage the following:

-eyes- leading to diabetic retinopathy and possible blindness
-blood vessels- increasing the risk of heart attack, stroke, and peripheral artery obstruction
-nerves- leading to diabetic neuropathy, foot sores and possible amputation, possible paralysis of the stomach, chronic diarrhea
-kidneys- leading to kidney failure

Diabetes has also been linked to impotence and digestive problems. It is important to note that controlling blood pressure and blood glucose levels, plus regular screenings and check ups, can help reduce the risk of these complications. The causes and risk factors of diabetes are the following: sedentary lifestyle, obesity weighing 20 percent above a healthy body weight, advance age, unhealthy diet, family history of diabetes, improper functioning of the pancreas, minority race, this is usually high risk in Black, Hispanic, American, Indian, westernized Asian and native Hawaiian populations. Medications like cortisone and some high blood pressure drugs, women having given birth to a baby weighing more than 9 lbs. Previously diagnosed gestational diabetes and IGT. Usually, diabetes symptoms for type 1 Diabetes are frequent urination, increased thirst, extreme hunger, unexplained weight loss, extreme fatigue, blurred vision, irritability, nausea and vomiting. For type 2, unexplained weight gain, pain, cramping, tingling or numbness in the feet, unusual drowsiness, frequent vaginal or skin infections, dry itchy skin and slow healing sores.

To diagnose the diabetes, it is needed to get the complete history and physical examination. There are different kinds of laboratory test that the doctor may perform to diagnose this condition, such as urine test, blood test, glucose-tolerance test, fasting blood sugar and glycohemoglobin test.

The patient with type I diabetes, it is manage by injecting insulin to make up for the insufficiency. Rapid or regular activity, semilente, Intermediate -acting, long acting, those are the kinds of insulin that can help a patient with type I diabetes. For type II, the management will be the 4 classes of prescription drugs like sulfonylureas, biguanides, alpha-glucoside, thiazolidinediones.

Awareness in the diabetes symptons is very important, it help us to prevent the risk in developing different kinds of disease.

There is still much research being done into diabetes, what its causes are and how it can be detected. Unfortunately, one of the biggest problems is people not realizing they have diabetes. They don't do anything until they see other severe symptoms and by then it's often too late.

Only approximately 10% of diabetes sufferers have type 1 diabetes. This is usually diagnosed in childhood; hence the name juvenile onset diabetes. However, it can technically occur into adulthood. Type 1 diabetes is largely still a mystery. The body, for some reason, destroys its own insulin producing cells. This leaves the person with no insulin. The sufferer is then completely reliant on being treated with insulin. There are genetic factors at play with the onset of type 1 diabetes. There can other factors as well, such as certain viruses or other environmental causes.

Type 2 diabetes is the far more common version of the disease. Up to 90% or more of all diabetes sufferers have this version of the disease. The body develops a complex resistance to insulin. Insulin in the body is used to control blood sugar. When the body produces insulin, the blood sugar in the body is lowered. In this way, insulin regulates the energy you receive from blood sugar (glucose) as well as monitoring the level naturally.

With an insulin resistance, the body does not regulate itself as well. Blood sugar levels become higher than normal due to this. Type 2 diabetes can be passed from generation to generation and is often found in overweight people or those with very bad diets. However, there are skinny and healthy people who suffer from this version of diabetes as well.

What you eat can play a big factor with type 2 diabetes. If you catch it before it's too late, you can even reverse the trend in your body. Taking out carbohydrates, which are broken down into sugar, is one step. Another step you can take is eating smaller meals more frequently, as opposed to larger meals just two or three times a day.

The most important step you can take however is to be informed. You need to get your blood sugar tested and evaluated. This is particularly true if you have a family history or if you notice other symptoms. Symptoms are wide ranging and could include lethargy, or in men, erectile dysfunction. Type 2 diabetes can be controlled effectively in most cases without the need for insulin shots.

Staying informed and living a healthy lifestyle with diet and exercise is the best thing you can do to prevent the onset of diabetes, and to battle it once you are diagnosed.

Diabetes, the disease which was once considered the wealthy man's burden, is no longer affiliated to the rich. It has become a common malady that is spreading its vicious tentacles far and wide day by day. It is a major abetting factor for heart attacks, kidney failures and stroke. As time goes, diabetes causes vision impairment too.

The complexity of diagnosis and treatment is further increased by the various types of diabetes and the exclusive medication required for each type. Type 1 diabetes is caused by the inability of the body to produce insulin altogether which results in increased blood sugar levels because insulin aids in the proper dissipation of glucose into the blood. This type necessitates total dependence on insulin injections. The other type of diabetes, type 2 is the most commonly occurring form of the disease. It is caused by the insulin deficiency and the failure of the body to utilize the insulin secreted by pancreas. The stark effect of this is obesity.

We cannot feel relieved by the fact that type 2 is not as bad as type 1 because, type 2 gradually morphs into type 1 diabetes as we age and our immune system becomes weak and ultimately results in total dependence on insulin. The ray of hope in this case is that with proper exercise, healthy lifestyle and balanced diet, the type 2 diabetes can be controlled. Herbal alternatives are most sought after, due to their very minimal side effects. Cinnamon is considered as the herbal panacea for the type 2 diabetes because of its ability to reduce LDL cholesterol and glucose. Research has shown that a daily intake of minimum 1g of cinnamon reduces the serum glucose level significantly in the long run.

To understand the effectiveness of cinnamon, it is essential to understand the factors that increase the blood sugar levels. Heavy consumption of unsaturated fatty acids, in other words, hydrogenated oils result in clogging of arteries with cholesterol which makes the cell wall and artery passage thin, preventing the glucose from reaching the cells. The key substance in cinnamon, methylhydroxy-chalcone polymer (MHCP), reduces this cholesterol level resulting in better absorption of glucose. It also improves the ability of the fat cells to respond to insulin which is a key benefit for type 2 diabetes. Diabetes also triggers multiple undesirable effects. One such defect is the malabsorption of necessary salts. One such salt whose absorption is prevented is magnesium. Cinnamon is a vital source of magnesium, hence supplementing our body with the necessary nutrients. MHCP in cinnamon reduce the insulin resistance in our body and triggers the insulin receptor tyrosine kinase.

Excessive quantities of anything result in negative effect. The research world is polarized on the benefits of cinnamon in reducing blood sugar levels. A particular research even says that MHCP is just a water-soluble polymer and does not have any additional qualities. The side-effects of cinnamon are mostly restricted to a specific set of conditions and there are no definite side effects affecting everybody. Studies have shown that excessive usage of cinnamon results in oral erythema multiforme which is lip swelling and mouth ulcer. It is not advisable for persons with haemophilic problems because its anti-clotting properties will cause profuse bleeding. Due to this reason, cinnamon intake is not recommended during menstruation too. Cinnamon is also a common allergy food so it cannot be recommended for everyone.

It is proven that cinnamon is greatly beneficial for people suffering from type 2 diabetes and its side effects are pronounced only in specific conditions of health like pregnancy. But it is always recommended and advised to consult the physician before trying out alternative remedy.

Is diabetes more likely to be caused by your genes or your environment? A study from the University of Wisconsin shows that Pima Indians in America are more than five times more likely to develop diabetes than their relatives in Mexico (Diabetes Care, August 2006). Pima Indians in Arizona have been shown by DNA typing to be very closely related to Pima Indians in the Sierra Madre mountains of Mexico. However, only 8.9 percent of Mexican Pimas developed diabetes, compared to 38 percent of those in the United States.

Obesity is a major risk factor for diabetes, but both populations were similarly obese. About eight percent of the Pima men and 20 percent the Pima women suffered from obesity. However, the Mexican Pimas were far more active than the American ones and ate far fewer refined carbohydrates. This study show that diabetes is more an environmental disease than just a genetic one. Your genes determine how you respond to the environment. Since this study agrees with hundreds of others, everyone should exercise and limit refined carbohydrates such as flour and sugar, whether or not there is a family history of diabetes.

Another recent study shows that the best predictor of diabetes is a test called Hemoglobin A1C (HBA1C), which measures the amount of sugar stuck on cell membranes. At the American Diabetes Association meeting in June 2006, Dr. Peter Baginsky of Santa Rosa, California showed that HBA1C can be used not only to identify people who already have diabetes, but also as a screening test to predict which people are likely to develop diabetes in the future. This allows doctors to treat pre-diabetes before people suffer their heart attacks, strokes and other side effects that can be the first sign that the person has diabetes.

He also showed that people who have HBA1Cs above 5.8 have a 92 percent chance of being diabetic as determined by a fasting glucose tolerance test. The HBA1C test does not require fasting and can be done with only one draw of blood, while the glucose tolerance test takes seven. It is less expensive and has the potential to save a lot of lives by getting diabetics into treatment earlier.

One of the most common metabolic disorders in today's world is diabetes. Malfunctioning of the pancreas in - producing too little insulin, resistance to insulin, or both and this causes diabetes. Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas to help in converting sugar, starches, and other foods into energy. A person who has regular high levels of blood glucose is diagnosed to suffer from diabetes. There are three types of diabetes - Type I, Type II, and Gestational diabetes.

Polydipsia or increased thirst causing to drink fluids more often, Polyphagia or increased appetite, Polyuria or frequent passing of urine, Blurred eye vision, Lack of energy and fatigue, Unusual and sudden weight loss, Dry itchy skin, Slow healing sores, Losing sensation or tingling and numbness in feet are all diabetes symptoms.

The different allopathic diabetes medicines are - Meglitinide Drugs, Alpha-glucosidase Inhibitors, Thiazolidinedione Drugs, DPP-4 Inhibitors, Sulfonylureas Drugs, Biguanide Drugs, Dopamine Receptor Agonists, Bile Acid Sequestrants, and Combination Drugs.

In Ayurveda, diabetes is also known as Madhumeha and according to them, there are 20 types of diabetes - four types are due to Vata, six types from Pitta, and Kapha causes the remaining ten. Ayurveda for Diabetes helps to maintain blood sugar and keep kidneys, liver, eyes, and heart safe as these organs are affected by long drawn diabetes. Some diabetes herbal medications are listed here - Gymnema Sylvestre, Salacia oblonga, Bitter Melon, Cinnamon, Fenugreek, Ginseng, Aloe vera, and Chandraprabha. Some specified herbs for diabetes are - Savory to alleviate thirst, Broccoli, Ginseng, Green Tea, Lantana, Plantain, Sage to lower blood sugar, Evening Primrose for blood circulation, and Aloe Vera, Beans, Ginseng, Green Tea, Plantain to normalize blood sugar.

In Ayurvedic medication since ages, cow urine is used to prepare diabetes medicines. A recent scientific study by Dr. Jayakumar and his team in their research have found that the cow urine has anti-diabetic properties and has raised hope for millions of diabetic patients in India and abroad. The project funded by the State Government will be over five years.

Natural medicines for diabetes do not cause any side effects and help in stimulating pancreas to function normally. Any form of regular exercise, stopping smoking and alcohol, and taking a balanced diet along with few life-style changes can help in controlling diabetes. Some yoga exercises that are beneficial for diabetes are Sarvangasana, Halasana, the Child pose, Paschimotasana, and Ardha Matsyendrasana. Diabetes yoga helps to manage diabetes by activating glandular system responsible for this illness.

In many ways the massive increase in diabetic sufferers has crept up on us over the last few years and gone relatively unnoticed until now. What causes diabetes is a subject which will create many different arguments and comments but we need to know what is causing diabetes before the situation can be fully addressed and rectified.

What is causing diabetes to become more commonplace?

In order to fully understand both type I diabetes and type II diabetes it is worth remembering their specific characteristics. Type I diabetes is literally the body's inability to create enough insulin to prompt cells and organs to withdrawal sugar from the blood as energy thereby leaving sufferers lethargic, tired and facing many other medical side effects.

Type II diabetes is a situation where the body becomes insulin tolerant which effectively means that sufficient insulin is being created, in a normal situation, but the body is not reading the signals from insulin which should prompt it to withdrawal sugar from the blood. As a consequence, yet again surfers will feel lethargic, tired, produce excess urine and other medical side effects.

Hereditary

Many people believe that both types of diabetes can be hereditary but it is more likely that type I diabetes would be past generation to generation. Even if the diabetes gene is present in any one person it is not certain they will develop the condition and it is unclear exactly what "switches on" the rogue diabetic gene.

Poor diet

A poor diet goes hand-in-hand with obesity which is an epidemic that is grabbing hold of every area of the globe. Many experts believe that low protein and low fiber intake together with excessive amounts of refined products such as these find fat are behind the massive increase in the number of diabetics.

Obesity

As you mention above, obesity and diet habits go hand-in-hand as well as a lack of exercise for many people around the world. The more overweight you are the more precious places upon the body and the more likely you are to become insulin resistant. It has been shown that an improvement in your exercise as well as improvement in your diet can have an immediate impact upon your blood sugar levels.

Stress

Even though many experts have been predicting a shorter working week and more leisure time for many people around the world this situation has not appeared as yet. Life can be more stressful than ever for many people which can lead to other medical conditions including diabetes.

Infections

An infection in certain parts of the body can bring on diabetes with pancreas issues often bringing on diabetes type II. Any infection which interferes with the body's ability to create sufficient insulin to regulate the level of sugar in the blood can lead to full-blown diabetes.

Conclusion

In the eyes of many experts there is no one reason why instances of diabetes continue to grow in the modern world. However, there is a very close association between obesity and lack of exercise citing many experts suggest we need to control the current obesity epidemic which will then bring down the number of future diabetic sufferers. What is causing diabetes to grow is still not 100% certain but we need to find out what causes diabetes as soon as possible.

Diabetes is a disease that is characterized by high levels of glucose, or sugar, in the blood. The increased amount sugar in the blood is a result of either defects in the production of insulin or the way in which insulin is used by the body.

Complications from diabetes can lead to dozens of other medical conditions, such as kidney failure, peripheral vascular disease, blindness, neuropathy, gum disease, or heart disease.

Type 1 diabetesis the result of a lack of insulin production because of the destruction of beta cells in the pancreas. These beta cells are responsible for the production of insulin that regulates blood glucose. Researchers have found that there is a combination of genetic and environmental factors that increase a person's risk for developing Type 1 diabetes.

There is limited knowledge of the exact cause of Type 1 diabetes but researchers do know that the body attacks the beta cells in the pancreas because of a mistake made by the immune system.

It is theorized that Type 1 diabetes is caused when an environmental toxin or pathogen triggers the immune system to attack itself. Also, you may be at risk for Type 1 diabetes if you suffer from other hormonal problems such as hypothyroidism or Hashimoto's or Addison's disease.

Type 1 diabetes can happen at any age but most often happens in children and young adults. This type of diabetes requires artificial insulin injections. This is why Type 1 diabetes is often called insulin-dependent diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is also called non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus or adult onset diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is caused when the body still produces enough insulin but the body has become resistant to the effects of the hormone. This type of diabetes usually develops in middle age and in overweight/obese individuals. It is most common in people who are older, obese, have a family history of diabetes or have had gestational diabetes.

There are specific risk factors that place people in a higher risk category for developing Type 2 diabetes. These risk factors include sedentary lifestyle, stress, infection, hereditary or inherited traits, age, poor diet high in carbohydrates and processed foods, obesity, hypertension and high triglyceride and cholesterol levels.

The main causes contributing to developing Type 2 diabetes are high carbohydrate diets and the sedentary "coach potato" lifestyle, which often leads to inflammation and obesity. Inflammation and obesity which are linked to increased insulin resistance in the body and a poor functioning immune system.

The third type of diabetes which affects the glucose system is gestational diabetes. This is a diabetic situation that occurs in an individual who is pregnant and is believed to be caused by hormonal changes in weight gain.

When found early on in the pregnancy it is easily treated so that it does not affect the growth and development of the infant. Most women who develop gestational diabetes find that the condition disappears after the delivery of the baby. However, having gestational diabetes puts a woman at greater risk for developing Type 2 diabetes later in life.

Women that develop gestational diabetes can often have larger than normal babies. We're talking 10 pounders here! Also, babies born to women with gestational diabetes tend to have low blood sugar levels after birth (hypoglycemia).

Researchers and scientists continue to search for the exact causing factors of diabetes. The only reasonable treatment options available for individuals at this time are diet, exercise and medications.

Controlling your blood sugar levels is the most important aspect of diabetes management and care. The better controlled your blood sugar levels are the lower your chances of developing diabetic complications are.

Diabetes Mellitus is a disease which affects millions of people all over the world and is a leading cause of death. Diabetes is caused when the body fails to produce and use insulin which is incredibly valuable for the human body. The body uses insulin to convert sugar, starches and food byproducts into energy. There are three main forms of the diabetes which can affect everyone at any time in their life.

Type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes are all on the increase, and unfortunately, more children than ever before are suffering with some form of diabetes. The exact cause of diabetes is still un-known; however, there are typical symptoms, which will point, towards this disease. If you are suffering from fatigue, weight loss, extreme thirst and hunger and frequent urination it may be an idea to check that you are not suffering from some form of diabetes.

Pancreas transplants have been attempted in the past; however, they have proved to be unsuccessful, and for some people, they will need to be treated with insulin for the rest of their lives. Your diet and lifestyle may be affecting your diabetes. Often doctors will advise losing weight, giving up smoking, alcohol and eating a healthy diet to improve the diabetes. You will need to learn how to monitor your blood sugar levels and alter your diet to ensure that you are receiving the right amounts of sugar.

People who suffer from Type 1 diabetes will need to take insulin every day, and this will need to be injected. Children who suffer from this form of diabetes will soon learn how to administer the insulin themselves, and it will become a part of everyday life. Type 2 diabetes is often easier to control and will fluctuate depending on your diet and lifestyle.

Obesity is often the largest cause of Type 2 diabetes and losing weight and keeping fit will help you to keep the disease under control. Although some people will need to have insulin every day, other people will only need it when their blood sugar is low. Pregnant women with often suffer from diabetes during their pregnancy and this form is known as gestational diabetes. If the diabetes is monitored well, and a healthy diet and lifestyle remains the diabetes should go away once the baby is born.

Some people feel that diabetes is genetic, and you are more likely to suffer from diabetes if there is a family history of the disease. However, some children and family members never suffer from the disease at all; therefore, it is still unknown if there is a connection. Diabetes is an extremely serious disease which can lead to a huge number of other health problems and conditions. In severe cases, people have lost limbs due to poor circulation, suffered from strokes and heart disease.

If you are suffering from any of the symptoms relating to diabetes, you must ensure that you seek professional medical assistance. The sooner you can be diagnosed and a treatment found the more likely you are to remain as healthy as possible. You should ensure that you eat well and exercise daily, both of which will help your body to deal with any illness or disease.

There is ample research supporting the fact that somebody with a history of diabetes in the family has a 33% higher chance of developing diabetes than a person with no such history. We may not understand all the causes for diabetes, however it is widely known among the scientific community that diabetes is a genetic condition.

While it is true that heredity plays an important role in determining whether you are at risk for diabetes, it may be true that learning the causes of diabetes mellitus and taking steps to control its onset can mean that you can be in control of your life and have the ability to live a healthy, long life.

Often described by medical experts as the "prosperity" disease, diabetes is frequently caused when people overeat methodically, particularly if they consume great amounts of processed foods, proteins, and fats. Processed foods, such as bread, cake, chocolate, and ice cream, are rich in refined carbohydrates and are dangerous to the body when eaten in great quantity over a long period of time. Proteins and fats are as well major contributors because the body transforms them into sugar.

Scientific studies show that up to 85% of people having diabetes are obese. Nearly 80% of type-two non-insulin dependent diabetics, in the United States alone, are overweight. When excessive fatty tissue is present in the body, insulin 'll not work effectively. Normally, insulin allows blood sugar to enter the tissue and muscle cells by using receptor sites located on cell surfaces. If too much fat is present, the cells become insulin resistant, thereby leading to diabetes.

In the aging procedure, people have a tendency to put on extra weight and some end up developing mild diabetes due to increased blood sugar. If they choose to modify their diet and lose weight, their diabetes condition will improve greatly.

One of the well-documented contributory causes of diabetes mellitus is too much stress in your life. An individual who is suffering from too much anxiety and stress should search out ways to relieve some of the burden and learn to relax so as to cut back their danger of developing diabetes. When you're continually stressed out, this can have a negative impact on your metabolism and guide to sugar in the urine.

A person who strives to be physically active can greatly cut back the chances of developing diabetes later in life. Maintaining a regimen of moderate exercise not only helps in controlling your weight though will greatly improve your wellbeing and sense of health. A healthy person's body functions better and can procedure blood sugar more effectively as insulin production stabilizes. The stress on your pancreas 'll decrease and it won't wish to work as troublesome, making you healthier for the long term.

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, or you fear developing diabetes, you may want to know what causes it. At one time, nobody knew what caused diabetes, but after years of research, we do now know what causes diabetes, and in many cases, how to prevent it.

The leading cause of diabetes was once thought to be inheriting it through the blood lines. This is still a major cause of diabetes, but no longer the leading cause. If someone in your blood line has diabetes -- particularly in the direct blood line of the generation before you, you are at a higher risk of developing diabetes.

The leading cause of diabetes, however, is being overweight. When you are overweight, your body becomes more resistant to insulin. This is particularly true if your BMI, or Body Mass Index, is greater than 30%. If you don't know your BMI, measure your waist. If you are female and your waist is bigger than 35 inches, or if you are male and your waist is bigger than 40 inches, you are at risk of developing diabetes.

Whether you are overweight or not, eating a poor diet is a cause of diabetes. Your diet should be high in protein and fiber, and if it isn't, you are at risk. Leading a sedentary lifestyle is also a factor. You need to be exercising at least three times a week, for 30 minutes each time, and preferably 30 minutes a day, five days a week.

Recent research has discovered that infections, such as strephylococci, can also lead to diabetes. Age is being blamed as well. As you get older, your chances of developing diabetes increase. Furthermore, just as diabetes can lead to high blood pressure, suffering from hypertension can lead to diabetes. There are also numerous drugs that can actually aid in the development of diabetes, such as Clozapine, Risperidone, Olanzapine, Ziprasidone, and Quetiapine.

If any of these situations apply to you, you should get tested for diabetes. You should also take steps to make lifestyle changes to avoid the development of diabetes.

To understand the main cause of diabetes, it is important for us to understand how the pancreas responds in producing insulin beta cells needed for the body's glucose absorption.

Under normal circumstances, the glucose (sugar) will enter the bloodstream which will act as fuel for the body. The pancreas may be slow or may fail to produce tiny insulin factories called beta cells in order to transfer the glucose to the liver cells, muscles and fats. If there are few or no beta cells that enable other cells to receive glucose, the blood sugar level will increase. This is the main or primary cause of diabetes.

Due to the failure of the pancreas to produce the insulin beta cells, the level of unabsorbed glucose will also increase as the constant supply of glucose keeps coming in. As a recourse, the body will merely flush out the unabsorbed glucose by way of urine. Hence, the diabetic will experience thirst and frequently pass urine. The diabetes sufferer will need insulin injections to meet the body's insulin requirements.

In other cases, the disorder may be due to the resistance of other cells to the insulin cells. There is now failure in glucose absorption but pancreatic production of insulin continues as an automatic response to the presence of glucose. Both insulin and glucose levels become elevated yet no absorption is taking place in order to supply the body with energy.

Other causes of diabetes may include the following factors:

1. Immunity- The beta cells of the pancreas is attacked by a disturbance in the immune system thereby a type 1 diabetes emerges. Under type 1 diabetes, the sufferer becomes insulin dependent due to the failure of the pancreas to produce insulin. This usually happens to children and adolescents.

2. Inflammatory- Viral infections are transferred from the blood to the pancreas resulting to damaged beta cells.

3. Hereditary- Some hereditary genes contribute to the emergence of diabetes in some people. If the parent is diabetic, chances are the offspring will be afflicted by type 1 diabetes by around 10%, more or less.

4. Environment- This includes the following factors:

a. Weight- In some studies, 80% of overweight patients are diabetics.

b. Sex- Diabetes is prevalent in women than men in the ratio of 2 to 1. Gestational diabetes happens at a later period of pregnancy. This will make the mother prone to type 2 diabetes.

c. Age- This usually occurs after the age group of 45 years old.

d. Exercise- Lack of exercise can reduce the ability of the body to absorb insulin. In the absence of exercise, type 2 diabetes typically emerges.

e. Eating Habits- Eating lots of fats, sweets and even fast meals will contribute in weight gain. Once there is already too much fats in the body cells, the sensitivity of cells decrease in absorbing insulin.

f. Ethnicity - For some unexplained reasons, women who are of African, Hispanic, American Indian, and Asian descent, are prone to develop diabetes.

Since we already know the exact cause of diabetes, simple but important health rules such as eating the proper food and in the right amounts as well as engaging in exercises should become a normal part of our life.

Diabetes mellitus - who hasn't heard of it? Indeed, diabetes mellitus (DM) seems to be a universal language for high blood sugar.

Millions of people are diagnosed with diabetes mellitus, a fact that is indeed getting a lot of attention from health care experts all over the world. The complications of diabetes mellitus can, after all, cause serious health problems leading to death.

The General Classifications

Diabetes mellitus are generally of three types:

o type 1 diabetes which is insulin-dependent or juvenile onset
o type 2 diabetes which is non-insulin-dependent or adult onset
o gestational diabetes which occurs during pregnancy

The Signs and Symptoms

Knowing the tell-tale signs of diabetes mellitus is important in order to be diagnosed and treated early. For type 1 and type 2 diabetes, the presenting signs and symptoms are basically the same:

o increased urination
o increased thirst
o weight loss
o feelings of hunger
o blurred vision
o nausea
o fatigue

For gestational diabetes, though, it may be difficult to conclude because all these signs and symptoms can be easily mistaken as pregnancy-related. The best thing to find out is to undergo an oral glucose tolerance test --- this is the most definitive test for gestational diabetes It's usually conducted on the fifth month of pregnancy.

The Treatment Options

The treatment options for diabetes mellitus include eating the right diet, engaging in regular exercises, and medications. In milder cases of diabetes mellitus, eating the right foods and engaging in exercises are enough to keep the blood sugar levels down, but in more serious cases, diabetic medications have to be administered.

The right diet for diabetics includes starches in the form of whole grains, bread, cereals; fresh fruits and vegetables, some meat products, and just a little of fat and sweets. How much you need to eat of these, though, may depend on your body weight and other needs. It's always best to consult a dietician to program a diabetic meal that is just right for you.

Exercise should be made part of any diabetic treatment plan. Exercise helps you to lose weight and keeps you generally healthy.

Type 1 diabetics most likely need insulin therapy, but type 2 diabetics may be able to manage their diabetes with oral medications. Insulin needs to be injected into the body, the reason why a lot of diabetics frown on the idea of insulin therapy. Insulin may be rapid-acting, intermediate-acting or long-acting.

Diabetic Emergencies and Complications

Managing diabetes mellitus is extremely important in order to prevent complications such as:

o atherosclerotic heart disease
o myocardial infarction
o peripheral vascular disease
o cerebrovascular disease
o renal artery stenosis
o diabetic retinopathy
o diabetic nephropathy
o peripheral neuropathy

At the same time, you may also want to prevent the likelihood of medical emergencies such as:

o diabetic ketoacidosis which can cause coma and eventually death. Intensive care is essential
o nonketotic hyperglycemic-hyperosmolar coma

Responsibilities of a Diabetic

As a diabetic you also need to do your share in the treatment, that means:

o making regular visits to your diabetologist
o constant monitoring of your blood sugar levels
o observing yourself for anything that indicates an increase in your blood sugar levels and reporting the matter to your doctor
o eating the right diet
o doing daily or regular exercises
o strictly taking your medications

With these tips, you should be able to cope well with diabetes mellitus.

Type 2 diabetes is the most prevalent type of diabetes, and is accountable for over 80% of diabetes cases world wide.

It is commonly found in adults but sadly nowadays, many adolescents are developing this type due to an intake of excess food and a sedentary lifestyle with little or no exercise.

How should it be treated? How should it be handled?

The first step is that a diabetic must always be conscious of his blood sugar levels. A sufferer must check his blood sugar levels regularly to ensure it does not rise and when it does rises, takes effective steps to bring it down to tolerable levels.

The next step is to curtail food intake. Basically, diabetes is caused when the body over a period of time takes in more calories than it can handle. This impairs the pancreas and leads to insulin resistance. And since insulin breaks down the body's sugar, an excess of sugar accumulates in the body.

Since carbohydrates are the major source of sugars(glucose) in the body, it is recommended that carbohydrates account for between 40-60% of the their daily intake of food of a diabetic. With a reduction in the intake of carbohydrates will come reduction in the quantity of sugar available in the blood system.

One must also reduce the intake of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats as this can negate the effect of the lower carbohydrate intake. The two fats can be substituted with saturated fats.

Diet should be kept to a regimen of 1,500 - 1,800 calories a day of food. Variables exist in the calorie intake due to factors such as height, sex drive, age and other issues of the concerned persons. What matters is that the diabetic controls his or her food intake for the purpose of managing the blood sugar levels.

The next step is exercise. Exercise to me is the most important.

Exercise has the ability to not only burn off the excess body fat but most importantly has the natural ability to cut down the food intake of the sufferer by reducing the appetite for food.

So what kinds of exercises are best for a diabetic?

It has been found out that a an exercise that is a mix of aerobic and resistance training had the best results on glycemic levels. Though aerobics and resistance training can be conducted separately, the best results were gotten when they were combined.

The amount of exercise needed is not extreme but has to be consistent. For most people, exercise starts off with a little of fanfare and after a while, interest dims and the exercise regime stops. Consistency in the exercise regimen is the key here to reducing the weight and therefore glycemic levels.

The truth about diabetes is that once the weight is well controlled, the level of sugar in the blood drops to tolerable levels.

Most sufferers must see to it that they develop a healthy exercise regime which they adhere to so as to bring their glycemic levels down and also reduce their appetite for foods.

Even a brisk 45minutes walk everyday or taking the stairs rather than the lifts can make a remarkable difference.

It is common to prescribe drugs for diabetes treatment. Type 2 however responds very well to exercise and a sensible diet.

If however the above regimen does not appeal to you, perhaps you find it too tasking or unappealing, it is advised you follow a drug regimen.

Different Types/Different Causes of Diabetes

There are three main types of diabetes -type-1, type-2, and gestational. Type-1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease and most often affects children and young adults. An autoimmune disease is one in which the body ability to fight infections is decreased causing the body to attack its own cells. In type-1 diabetes, the body often attacks the beta cells in the pancreas -the cells that produce insulin in the body. The main diabetes causes of type-1 diabetes are:

Infections with specific bacteria or viruses

Food-borne chemical toxins

Cows milk -an unidentified component in cow milk can trigger an autoimmune reaction in the body. Young infants who are given cow milk have a higher risk of contracting type-1 diabetes.

The main diabetes causes of type-2 diabetes are:

Increasing age

Obesity

Physical inactivity

Poor diet

The main diabetes causes of gestational diabetes are:

Hormones produced during pregnancy blocking actions of insulin

Mother body can't produce enough insulin

Common Causes of Diabetes

There are some common diabetes causes that include genetic causes as well as environmental causes. The risk of diabetes is higher if there is a family history of diabetes. Environmental factors that can lead to the onset of diabetes include poor diet, lack of exercise, obesity, and stress. Diabetes is a disease that can be prevented -or controlled once a diagnosis has been made.

Prevention and Control in Diabetes

While the symptoms of diabetes are not life threatening, diabetes can lead to other more serious diseases and illnesses. People who have been diagnosed with diabetes are at a higher risk of diseases and illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, neuropathy and nerve damage, foot conditions, and blindness. It is extremely important to control your diabetes in order to avoid the onset of these more serious and sometimes life-threatening illnesses.

There are medications that can be used in the control of diabetes, as well as many natural remedies. However, the single most important aspect of a diabetic management plan is a healthy diet and exercise. A healthy diet should consist of fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, carbohydrates in healthy portions, Omega-3 fatty acids, proteins in healthy portions, and fiber. A healthy diet not only helps your overall health, but also can be a major factor in offsetting the symptoms of diabetes. The longer you can prevent the symptoms of diabetes, the longer you can decrease the risks of more serious illnesses associated with diabetes.

A regular exercise routine is also an important factor in the prevention and management of diabetes. All parts of your body are designed to work together in order to sustain life. By keeping your muscles toned and your blood flowing correctly, you can help your body to fight off infections and your body will be able to help in managing the symptoms of many illnesses. Strong muscles in the abdomen are essential for helping your digestive system work normally.

A Long, Healthy Life

It is possible to live a long, healthy life. You can help ensure that your body will work properly for a long time by beginning a healthy diet and routing exercise program early in life. The old saying, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" has real meaning. By choosing to live a healthy lifestyle, you are choosing to consciously help your body fight of the symptoms of many illnesses and diseases. And, while some diseases are hereditary, such as diabetes, and you may still be at risk, by choosing to maintain a healthy lifestyle, you are helping your body become prepared to delay the onset of symptoms and to control the symptoms once they appear.

Certain factors that contribute to the development of diabetes are

Heredity

Heredity is a major factor. That diabetes can be inherited has been known for centuries. However, the pattern of inheritance is not fully understood. Statistic indicates that those with a family history of the disease have a higher risk of developing diabetes than those without such a background. The risk factor is 25 to 33 percent more.

One reason why diabetes, especially type-2 diabetes runs in the family is because of the diabetes gene. But even it is caused by genetic factors beyond your control; there is no reason to suffer from it. Diabetes cannot be cured in full sense of the term, but it can be effectively controlled so that you would not know the difference.

Diet

Diabetes has been described by most medical scientists as a prosperity' disease, primarily caused by systematic overeating. Not only is eating too much sugar and refined carbohydrates harmful, but proteins and fats, which are transformed into sugar, may also result in diabetes if taken in excess.

It is interesting to note that diabetes is almost unknown in countries where people are poor and cannot afford to overeat.

The incidence of diabetes is directly linked with the consumption of processed foods rich in refined carbohydrates, like biscuits, bread, cakes chocolates, pudding and ice creams.

Obesity

Obesity is one of the main causes of diabetes. Studies show that 60 to 85 % of diabetics tend to be overweight. In the United States of America, about 80 percent of type -2 non-insulin dependent diabetics are reported to be overweight.

Excess fat prevents insulin from working properly. The more fatty tissue in the body, the more resistant the muscle and tissue cells become to body insulin. Insulin allows the sugar in the blood to enter the cells by acting on the receptor sites on the surface of the cells.

Older people often tend to gain weight, and the same time, many of them develop and mild form of diabetes because who are over weight can often improve their blood sugar simply by losing weight.

Stress and Tension

There is a known connection between stress and diabetes, those who are under stress and/or lead an irregular lifestyle, need to take adequate precautions and make necessary lifestyle adjustments.

Grief, worry and anxiety resulting from examinations, death of a close relative, loss of a joy, business failure and strained marital relationship, all a deep influence on the metabolism and may cause sugar to appear in the urine.

Smoking

Smoking is another important risk factor. Among men who smoke, the risk of developing diabetes is doubled. In women who smoke 25 or more cigarettes a day, the risk of developing diabetes is increased by 40 percent.

Lifestyle Risk

People who are less active have greater risk of developing diabetes. Modern conveniences have made work easier. Physical activity and exercise helps control weight, uses up a lot of glucose (sugar) present in the blood as energy and makes cells more sensitive to insulin. Consequently, the workload on the pancreas is reduced.

People who suffer from diabetes always wonder what causes diabetes, what they have done wrong with their life style. Well, this disease appears when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or it stops producing insulin or the insulin which is produced does not work efficiently. This causes a high level of glucose in the blood.

Let's see now what causes diabetes in the case of type 1 of this disease. Insulin producer cells in the pancreas are destroyed, causing a severe lack of insulin. This phenomenon can be provoked by the body, attacking and destroying its own cells, and producing insulin in the pancreas.

For diabetes type 2, what causes diabetes is that available insulin is not enough or it can be abnormal therefore it is not efficient. Factors like old age, obesity, lack of physical activity contribute to this disease. Actually, what causes diabetes is a never ending topic as there are a lot of factors that favor it and have an important role when the first symptoms are noticed. Thus, diabetes can occur at any age, beginning with childhood and ending with old age. Therefore you can talk about juvenile diabetes (12-15 years) or about adulthood diabetes, which is more frequent between the ages of 50 and 60. To continue with, urban environment can be a cause, because sedentary life can favor diabetes.

Profession indicates a higher frequency of diabetes in the case of intellectuals or those who work in the alimentary environment, or in the case of those people who are traumatized from the psychical point of view. Heredity can be as well a factor which contributes to diabetes occurrence. It is a hereditary morbid predisposition, as in the patients' hereditary collateral antecedents it is recorded diabetes in a per cent of almost 45. This hereditary predisposition can trigger, more rarely, a direct character of disease transmission from ascendants to descendants, but most of the times this transmission skips generations (grandchild - grandfather) or takes a collateral character (uncle - nephew). The same blood type, even if controversially, suggests that this disease appears more frequently in the case of diabetes patients' direct relatives. Thus, it increases the chances to highlight hereditary tares.

So you can conclude that the patient who suffers from diabetes is born with a latent predisposition, a hereditary one, characterized by a sort of inferiority state, by the sub-functionality of the pancreatic insular system. Thus, the potentially ill person can suffer under certain conditions of diabetes. This time, causes like over-alimentation and therefore obesity which is a consequence of it, will make this latent predisposition manifest, favoring diabetes apparition.

Statistics show that most of the persons who suffer from diabetes are overweight, that is why doctors say that benign diabetes especially it is rather an alimentation vice which leads to obesity and then to diabetes.

Finally, some dysfunctions can have occasional role in diabetes occurrence, like pancreas problems, skull or abdominal traumatisms, alcoholism, arteriosclerosis etc. which can lead to endocrine pancreas fatigue. Thus diabetes can appear as a result of interrupting direct connection between the brain and the pancreas.

Diabetes is one of the fastest growing diseases in humans, but did you know that cats with diabetes are also on the rise? Diabetes is due to inadequate production of insulin by the pancreas, or an inadequate response of the cells to insulin, and without insulin, the body cannot utilize glucose; elevated blood sugar levels are the result. In cats, excess glucose is eliminated by the kidneys, producing frequent urination. To make up for the water lost, diabetic cats will drink excessive amounts of water. Other symptoms may include sudden weight loss (or occasional gain), ravenous or absent appetite and weak back legs.

Cats with diabetes can be treated, but the disease is fatal if left alone. The cat must go on a low carbohydrate diet, which is a critical component of treatment. In many cases it is effective on its own. Low carbohydrate diets have the ability to reduce the amount of insulin needed. Therefore, it keeps blood sugar normal. So how do you put your cat on a low-carbohydrate diet? Carbohydrate levels are highest in dry cat foods, so cats are best off with canned food. Canned food can sometimes be prescribed for diabetic cats, but veterinarians sometimes recommend commercial canned food as well. A veterinarian can help you decide which type of food is best for your cat.

Diabetes mellitus isn't just treated through diet, sometimes cats need more changes to their lifestyles. They may need to be injected with insulin to be kept healthy and there are some oral medications that can be given; however, they are mainly used when insulin is not an option for some reason. This is because they typically have more unpleasant side effects. To establish insulin therapy, veterinarians may administer blood and urine tests and physical examinations. It is important to never adjust insulin therapy on your own because it can cause complications.

There is currently no evidence that suggests diabetes can be prevented in cats. One way to lower your cat's risk of developing diabetes is to implement a pet weight management plan and make sure that you are promoting healthy diet and exercise. Obesity is definitely a risk factor in diabetes but it is also known that some breeds are more prone to diabetes than others. It may not matter how healthy your cat is, he/she may just be susceptible to the disease because of genetics.

The best way to prevent complications from feline diabetes is by keeping a close eye on your cat. If he/she doesn't currently have diabetes, watch out for the symptoms, especially frequent urination and increased thirst. If your cat already has diabetes, be sure to regularly visit the vet, administer proper treatment and watch out for symptoms of diabetes complications. Complications that may come about from feline diabetes include: diabetic neuropathy, nephropathy and cataracts. It can also lead to various problems with the skin, liver, kidneys, joints and body infections.

There are many causes of diabetes. Not all people have control of whether they could have prevented the disease. Eating healthy is a big factor in prevention, but some times that's not enough. Below are several ways it can be caused.

The disease is caused when the pancreas becomes dysfunctional. The body is dependent upon the insulin the pancreas secretes to keep the body's blood sugar levels normal. Many things can cause the pancreas to become dysfunctional and cause illness.

Diabetes is known to be higher in certain ethnicities such as Asian American, Hispanic, African American, Native American and Pacific Island descendants. The disease is known to be inherited and if it runs in your family, then you have a 25% chance of having it eventually.

Age is a big cause because as people get older, they exercise less and they gain weight, causing the body's pancreas to improperly secrete insulin. It can also be caused by a viral infection or illness affecting the pancreas, causing it not to secrete insulin properly.

However, the biggest cause is obesity. Excessive weight and fat in the body cause muscle and tissues not to react to insulin the way they should, almost making them resistant to the insulin the pancreas is secreting. The insulin will not function properly causing high blood sugar levels, eventually leading to the disease. Overeating can cause it also. The body needs a proper balance in its diet and if a body has too many carbohydrates, fats, or proteins, it can cause the pancreas to be dysfunctional also.

Frequent smoking can eventually lead to diabetes. Stress is also a major factor. The body's metabolism is directly influenced by its lifestyle. This includes the amount of daily stress; grief, and excessive worrying, that can cause the metabolism to react differently to insulin and the person to become a diabetic.

The body needs plenty of exercise and a balanced diet for the pancreas to properly function, secreting enough insulin. Many people cannot prevent this disease, especially if they inherit the disease or contract a viral infection causing it. The causes of diabetes vary, but the most important thing in trying to prevent it are maintaining a healthy lifestyle with plenty of exercise and eating right.

Since there are different types of diabetes, each type has a unique possible cause.

The main two causes of diabetes is the body's failure to produce enough of the insulin hormone, and secondly the body develops a resistance to insulin.

· Type 1 diabetes is due to decreased insulin production.

· Type 2 is due to insulin resistance in peripheral tissues.

· In juvenile diabetes, the cause might probably be a lack of vitamin D.

There is also gestational diabetes that only occurs in pregnant women.

Causes of diabetes -

Diabetes mellitus occurs when the pancreas does not create sufficient or any of the hormone insulin, or when the insulin produced does not work efficiently. Thus, this causes the level of glucose in the blood to be higher than normal levels

1. In Type 1 diabetes, the cells in the pancreas that make insulin are attacked and destroyed by the body's own immune system, causing a severe lack of insulin.

It is not clear why this happens, but possible triggers of this reaction could be -

· infection with a specific virus or bacteria;

· exposure to food-borne chemical toxins or

· exposure to cow's milk when as an infant, where as a yet unidentified component of the milk triggers an autoimmune reaction in the body.

However, these are only assumption, and are yet to be proven.

Type 1 diabetes usually develops in children, teenagers or young adults. Scientists believe this is a genetically caused condition and is not related to lifestyle habits.

Risk factors for developing type - 1diabetes include:

1. Family history - a child that has a parent or sibling with type 1 diabetes has a 2-6% chance of developing the disease.

2. Autoimmune disorders - such as thyroid disease and celiac disease, raises the risk of type 1 diabetes.

3. Early stoppage of breastfeeding and/or exposure to cow's milk - breastfeeding an infant for at least three months decreases the risk of type 1 diabetes. Some studies also show that exposure to cow's milk or cow's milk-based formula before one year of age may increase diabetes risk.

4. Ethnicity - Americans, Caucasians have a greater risk of type 1 diabetes as compared to African-Americans, Asian Americans, Latin Americans.

5. History of childhood virus diseases

2. Type 2 diabetes is believed to develop when:

· the receptors on the human cells in the body that respond to the action of insulin fall short of being stimulated by it - known as insulin resistance. In reaction to this, more insulin may be produced, and this over-production exhausts the insulin-manufacturing cells in the pancreas;

· there is just insufficient insulin available in the body and

· the insulin that is available may be abnormal and therefore doesn't function properly.

The following risk factors increase the chances of one developing Type 2 diabetes:

· increasing age

· if it runs in the family, ie. hereditary

· obesity

· high blood pressure

· diet which is high in fat and low in dietary fibre

· sedentary lifestyle with no or very less physical activity.

· certain medicines such as diuretics, which increase the amount of water flowing into the urine.

Corticosteroids can also lead to diabetes because they work against the action of insulin.

· gestational diabetes

· any illness or disease that damages the pancreas and affects its ability to produce insulin e.g. pancreatitis. (inflammation of the pancreas) and thyrotoxicosis (a poisonous condition that results from an overactive thyroid gland).

· hormone treatments, such as growth hormone, thyroid hormone and adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH).

What does not cause diabetes?

It is also important to be aware of the different myths that have arisen about the causes of diabetes over time.
Eating sweets, excess sugar or the wrong kind of food (fried and fatty food) does not cause diabetes. However, this type of a diet may cause obesity, and overweight people are generally prone to developing Type 2 diabetes. So, its not the food, but the effect of food that may cause diabetes. So, if you love eating and are a foodoholic, make sure to burn out the extra calories that go on to make the flab.

Stress does not cause diabetes, although it may be a trigger for the body turning on itself as in the case of Type 1 diabetes. Stress, however does definitely make the symptoms worse for those who already have diabetes.

People with diabetes should never eat sugar and sweets. Sugar and sweets do raise the blood glucose, but people with diabetes can safely eat sugar as part of their meal plan.
People with diabetes should eat a special diabetes diet. This is a false notion. One has to eat regulated, along with a balanced diet.

Diabetes is not contagious. Someone with diabetes cannot transmit it on to anyone else.

Millions of people around the world suffer from a medical condition called diabetes. It is a manageable disease but still continues to kill thousands because people remain ignorant about their health situation. Diabetes if treated right can be managed to live normal lives. Information about what causes diabetes is one step into getting a better understanding and help people from getting the disease.

Diabetes is basically caused by two factors; one we term as preventable and the other as non-preventable factors. Preventable factors or the name suggests are factors or causes that can be avoided.
Non-preventable factors on the other hand are factors which are hereditary or age related therefore can not be avoided but only be managed. Diseases are manageable during their early stages. If you feel any symptoms of diabetes it never hurts to know if you are suffering from it. This may prove to be a long term cost effective way of treating the disease.

Preventable Factors
Lifestyle greatly affects the development of the disease. Living a sedentary lifestyle or jobs which cause you to stand or sit for long periods of time may cause diabetes. Diets containing huge amounts of carbohydrates raise blood sugar levels. Medications such as steroids may also bring about the onset of the disease. Anything in excess is bad. Carbohydrates are good for the body but problems only happen when you take it in excess. A large intake of candies an also cause diabetes because your body will have a hard time breaking them down. Lifestyle changes are often difficult they require large amounts of discipline and may force us to cut on the things we love to do.

Non-preventable Factors
A history of diabetes in the family greatly enhances your chance of catching the disease. Studies have shown that children born to parents with diabetes are high risk for developing the disease. Age is also a factor in the development of diabetes. Older people have slower metabolism and cannot breakdown sugars as fast as before leading to high levels of sugars in their blood.

Diabetes is a manageable disease but with rising health care is proving to be too costly. Getting to know your family history and improving your lifestyle can go a long way in preventing or managing the disease. Reading about diabetes and how to prevent it may just be the best decision you'll ever make in having a happy and productive lifestyle.

When it comes to diabetes treatment, medications and drugs are not always necessary. In most cases, you can get more effective results by following some natural ways. Considering the very fact that it has been a rapidly growing popular and millions of people from all around the world are suffering form this disease, lots of researches and studies have been conducted in the medical world so far. The majority of researchers recommend the natural ways instead of taking drugs and medications. The best thing is that where medications can have certain side effects, there is no such fear associated with the natural treatment method. Here is a brief rundown about the same.

Develop A Proper Diet Plan
There can be an array of different natural ways for diabetes treatment, but the first thing that you have to do is to develop a balanced diet plan and stick with the same. The best diet menu for diabetic patients must include a low glycemic index that actually refers to the food items that are rich in fiber, contain moderate amount of protein, and a low level of carbohydrates. Following such diet programs have been found to be very effective in reducing the need for medications, reducing the intake of insulin levels, and reducing the levels of diabetes blood sugar. In fact, implementing this diet plan does not only cure diabetes but it also reduces blood pressure level and extra weight. Juices of Cabbage, Carrot, Spinach, Bitter gour, Cucumber, Lemon, Rose apple, and tomato can also be very effective. Besides that, the diabetic patients are also recommended to eat a handful of groundnuts everyday.

Follow A Proper Exercise Program
Exercises can also be very beneficial for diabetic patients. Following the right exercise program can be very helpful in diabetes treatment. Maintaining a good activity level can be very helpful in improves the good (HDL) cholesterol level, lowers bad (LDL) cholesterol, improves blood circulation, strengthens the immune system, improves the insulin's sensitivity, lowers the blood glucose levels, and reduces extra weight. You are also recommended to play some games, such as badminton. It can also be very helpful in the reduction of blood sugar level. Likewise, little jogging or daily walking in the morning can also significantly cure diabetes. Besides that, you can also try some yoga asanas, such as Paschitmottasana, Sarvangasana, Shalabhasana, Dhanurasana, and Bhujangasana.

Herbal Tips
Herbal treatment for diabetes has also proven its worth. Some of the best herbal medicines include garlic, madhuca, amla, fenugreek seeds, and curry leaves. For example, you can experience some significant results if you eat eight to ten fresh curry leaves everyday for at least twelve weeks. Swallowing a clove of garlic can also be a good cure for such disease.

The natural ways for diabetes treatment are gaining rapid popularity because of their effectiveness.

Diabetes mellitus is often referred to as a silent killer if proper treatment is not meted out. It is undoubtedly a disease of epidemic proportions that affects people of all age groups including young children. A worrying fact is that although the number of diabetes affected people is increasing, most of them are unaware of the real factors that can cause diabetes.

What is Diabetes?
It is basically a disorder of metabolic nature in which either a body does not produce enough insulin or if it does produce it does not use it appropriately. Insulin is a hormone that is used in converting glucose into energy. Glucose on the other hand is regular sugar occurring in food that is absorbed by intestinal cells in to the main bloodstream. Lack of insulin in the body causes the level of glucose to go at a very high level. A person suffering from diabetes will have a very small amount of insulin or no insulin in his body which causes a condition called hyperglycemia.

Types of Diabetes
There are three types of diabetes. First one is known as Type 1 which is the most severe form of diabetes. Second type is known as Type 2 which can be controlled to a certain level through proper care and treatment and the third one is Gestational diabetes which generally occurs during the second half of pregnancy and usually goes away once the child is delivered.

Causes
Type one diabetes as we mentioned above is the most severe form of diabetes and people suffering from it have to take daily insulin treatment to sustain life. Almost 10% diabetics have this form of diabetes. It can be hereditary in nature while some researchers have also found out that it viral infections could also cause type 1 diabetes in people who are genetically susceptible, i.e. if someone already is diagnosed with diabetes in their family.

Type 2 diabetes is a non insulin dependent condition in which a body develops resistance to insulin. In this type of diabetes although a body may produce insulin normally but the body is unable to use it properly. People who are obese, stressed out, aging, living a sedentary lifestyle are highly prone to this type of diabetes and yes it can genetic as well. More than 85% diabetics have this type of diabetes only.

Gestational Diabetes
As we mentioned above this is the least dangerous type of diabetes which ails pregnant women. It is caused when pregnancy hormones block insulin receptors which leads to increased blood glucose levels. Women who develop his condition are more prone to type 2 diabetes than other women.

Much has been written about Diabetes and rightfully so. Somewhere around 20-22 million Americans have it. Many countless millions more have it and don't know it. It is rapidly becoming a world wide epidemic. Many ask what are the causes of Diabetes? Here are some answers.

First of all, by way of background, Diabetes is a disease that affects the way your body uses food for energy. Normally the food you eat is broken down into a sugar called glucose. Insulin, which is produced by the pancreas, moves the glucose into your blood cells as fuel.

If you have diabetes your pancreas either doesn't make insulin at all (type 1) or the cells don't respond (type2). In either case the blood glucose levels get too high causing, over time, serious complications.

Here are some common myths. Diabetes is:

1. Not caused by eating sweets. Eating sweets can cause obesity which is a major risk factor.

2. Not contagious. You can't pass it on to others other than by genetics.

3. Not caused by stress although stress does make the symptoms worse.

Type 1 Diabetes affects only 5 % of all diabetics. In my opinion it is by far the worst of the two types. In type 1 the cells that make insulin are destroyed - an auto immune reaction causing dependence on outside sources of insulin. There is no cure for type 1 diabetes.

In type 2 the cell receptors that respond to insulin either don't work at all or not very well causing insulin resistance. The most common risk factors for Type 2 Diabetes are age, sedentary lifestyle and being overweight. My money goes on the weight issue as the #1 cause. Heredity too is a huge part.

Type 2 Diabetes has been called a disease of lifestyle. It certainly was in my case.
As with a lot of folks, as you get older your metabolism slows down, you start gaining weight, you are less active and more sedentary-a trifecta of reasons for the disease. Add in some unhealthy eating habits and you have the 'perfect storm' for Diabetes.

There is no cure for type 2. The good news is that it can be controlled and even prevented. HOW? You ask. Prevention is easy. Stay active, watch your diet and weight, and don't get older (just kidding). Once you have it, control is handled thru exercise, weight control, diet and if necessary medication. Control is absolutely necessary.

Bottom line IF YOU CAN AVOID IT-AVOID IT. Education is the key to dodging this bullet. Getting Diabetes is no picnic.

Diabetes is a disease caused due to the heightened blood sugar levels due to faulty insulin action and lack of metabolism to forms which can be stored (glycogen) or energy that can utilized. There are different types of diabetes and each is characterized by different things.

Type 1 diabetes is known as an autoimmune disorder where the cells which produce the insulin are destroyed due to action by the body against those cells. The triggers for type 1 diabetes are thought to be pathogens affecting the pancreas, which produces the insulin, like a virus. Genetic predisposition or poor nutrition can also aggravate the ailment.

Type 2 diabetes is caused due to the inability of the body to utilize the insulin produced by the body. In this type of the disease, the insulin is present but not taken up. This is also called non insulin dependent diabetes. This affects adults mostly post middle age.

Diabetes can be caused due to a host of factors ranging from hereditary traits since several genes have been implicated in the study of diabetes by scientists. If the parents have diabetes, it is likely that the child has a risk of getting it. Age can be a factor-type 2 diabetes is termed as adult onset diabetes.

Since the changes in lifestyle, eating out often, the easy availability of junk food which is high in sugars and fats have caused obesity, this can play a major role in the diabetes related symptoms. Sedentary lifestyles that are the norm with today's working people can contribute to the symptoms and stress factor multiplies the troubles.

There is a correlation between the food habits and ingestion of high cholesterol foods with high lipoprotein content and the incidence of diabetes. So it is often advised to incorporate a healthy diet into one's routine as well as regular exercise.

This question about the cause of diabetes is one that medical science hates to answer, over which many people get discouraged while waiting to get the understanding. More than a hundred years ago, someone wrote this statement. "Disease never comes without a cause. The way is prepared, and disease invited, by disregard of the laws of health."

Today, we know enough about type 2 diabetes and the controllable factors that determine the development and course of the disease, so that we can cause ourselves much less suffering and save on medical costs. If we work intelligently to remove the cause by following the simple health principles (laws) we can help demonstrate the answer to the question that our doctor may not like to answer.

Not one cause but several controllable factors Regarding type 2 diabetes, the American Diabetes Association says, "Experts don't know for sure what causes type 2 diabetes. They do know that you cannot catch it from someone else, like the flu. They know it is not caused by eating too much sugar. It does run in families.

That quote from the popular ADA publication, Diabetes A to Z: What You Need to Know About Diabetes - Simply Put, gets a little fuzzy near the end. I call it "blaming mama". However, there is no diabetes gene as in the sense that there is a sickle cell trait, or that bald-headedness is passed on to a son via his mother's chromosomes. What tends to "run in families" are habits - i.e. ways of doing things. Some of these ways are learned and others result from actual genetic makeup, but there is no diabetes gene.

All the evidence available today points to the fact that, for the large majority of cases, type 2 diabetes is caused by lifestyle habits or practices relating to diet, exercise, rest, stress.

The Anderson Experiment Research conducted years ago by Dr. James Anderson, M.D., professor of medicine and clinical nutrition at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine showed that a high fat diet can cause healthy people to develop type 2 diabetes in less than two weeks. Similar research has shown that carbohydrates and sugar do not cause diabetes.

What we know about diet and development of type 2 diabetes is that a high fiber, complex carbohydrate, low fat diet is both prevention and "cure" for the diabetic condition. The problem is that the food and prescription drug industries and their advertisers do not wish that this knowledge be loudly incident on your ear. It would be bad for the business economy if every would-be diabetic were to regulate their diet so that they would never need diabetes drugs, insulin, or expensive medical care. Such a health revolution could make the prescription drug industry comatose by saving more than 15% of all medical costs for direct diabetes treatment alone; not counting the large sums spent on treating related illnesses like kidney disease, blindness, other diabetes complications, and complications from drug side effects.

Sleep deprivation Can you remember hearing anyone say that lack of sleep or improper sleep can trigger the onset of type 2 diabetes? Probably not. However, this has been well documented in the journal, Diabetes Care and others for many years now. Our modern societies are well geared to keeping us awake and to get us fat at the same time.

Many middle aged people living in 2010 did not grow up on 24-hour television programming. That screen went blank at midnight when many boomers were growing up, and of course, most of our cities and towns slept at nightfall. We live in a different world and it is understandable why the rates of type 2 diabetes and related diseases keep rising despite our medical technology advances.

Lack of physical exercise The lack of physical exercise that would prevent overweight and obese conditions is clearly part of the cause of diabetes. However, when a diabetic engages in regular exercise, the benefits are tremendous. It should be understood that the only requirement for regular exercise is "time and commitment". Even the physically challenged can benefit from exercise AND you do not need a gym membership - walk.

You can lower your blood glucose level in two weeks, while losing extra weight and improving general health, by simply walking for 30 minutes every day. It may be necessary to start small and gradually increase the time. Remember to CONSULT YOUR PHYSICIAN before starting any physical exercise program, especially if you are at risk of cardiovascular problems.

Controllable factors - not genetics Although it is quite a challenge to give a direct answer to the question of what causes diabetes, there is enough evidence to avoid putting the blame on our genetic make-up. The answer has to do with a set of related and controllable health practices and behaviors. There are many type 2 diabetics (this author included) who have developed and maintained non-diabetic health profiles for many years without the use of drug medication or insulin, by simply modifying their diet, getting regular exercise, proper sleep (rest), and managing their response to stress.

Diabetes has many dangerous side effects, death being the final one, but there are many others. These can include blindness, organ damage, and damage to the circulatory system that can lead to the amputation of body parts that start with the toes and feet, and end up with losing legs, and so on.

The adult onset of diabetes is caused by high levels of glucose in the blood stream. The result is that excessive glucose starts to be expelled from the body via the urine. This increased level of sugar in the bloodstream is also considered to be caused by excessive amount of carbohydrates in the diets.

Your body will let you recognize the disease by giving you the following symptoms and signs:

1. Frequent urination: If there is excessive sugar in the blood, urination is more frequent. Because when insulin is not working or nonexistent, the kidneys are not able to filter the sugar back into the blood. The kidneys try to get more water from the blood in order to thin the glucose. This keeps the bladder full and will keep you going to the bathroom

2. Unquenchable thirst: As the body tries to get rid of the excess blood sugar, and is taking as much water from your internal system, you feel that you cannot drink enough water even if you are drinking much more water than usual.

3. Numbness or tingling: This usually starts in feet, legs, or the hands. This sign is known as neuropathy. It happens slowly as constantly elevated sugar in the human blood damages the nervous structure of the body. This occurs mainly in the extremities, and may cause pain. Diabetes Type 2 has a slow onset; this means it is so gradual that people are frequently not conscious of the development of the disease.

4. Weakness or fatigue: The food that we eat contains glucose that is delivered to the bloodstream where insulin is believed to aid in its change so it can be used in the cells in the body. The cells in turn use it to create the energy that we need. When insulin is not present or if there is no reaction in the cells to insulin, then the blood sugar stays outside of the cells, the cells will become starved and then you will feel tired and weak.

5. Blurred vision, itchy and or dry skin, recurrent infections or bruises and wounds that have a long healing periods, are all also indications that something is wrong

Now that you know a lot about the symptoms of adult onset diabetes. The most important thing is catching the disease before it becomes life threatening. Not just actual existence upon this earth, but the quality of the life you live can be threatened. So with a fair knowledge of the signs of diabetes. This will enable you to spot the problem the moment it takes place.

Diabetes mellitus (sometimes called "sugar diabetes") is a condition that occurs when the body can't use glucose (a type of sugar) normally. Glucose is the main source of energy for the body's cells. The levels of glucose in the blood are controlled by a hormone called insulin, which is made by the pancreas. Insulin helps glucose enter the cells.

In diabetes, the pancreas does not make enough insulin (type 1 diabetes) or the body can't respond normally to the insulin that is made (type 2 diabetes). This causes glucose levels in the blood to rise, leading to symptoms such as increased urination, extreme thirst, and unexplained weight loss.

Types of Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes (previously known as insulin-dependent diabetes)

Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune disease where the body's immune system destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. This type of diabetes, also known as juvenile-onset diabetes, accounts for 10-15% of all people with the disease. It can appear at any age, although commonly under 40, and is triggered by environmental factors such as viruses, diet or chemicals in people genetically predisposed. People with type 1 diabetes must inject themselves with insulin several times a day and follow a careful diet and exercise plan.

Type 2 diabetes (previously known as non-insulin dependent diabetes)

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, affecting 85-90% of all people with the disease. This type of diabetes, also known as late-onset diabetes, is characterised by insulin resistance and relative insulin deficiency. The disease is strongly genetic in origin but lifestyle factors such as excess weight, inactivity, high blood pressure and poor diet are major risk factors for its development. Symptoms may not show for many years and, by the time they appear, significant problems may have developed. People with type 2 diabetes are twice as likely to suffer cardiovascular disease. Type 2 diabetes may be treated by dietary changes, exercise and/or tablets. Insulin injections may later be required.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM)

GDM, or carbohydrate intolerance, is first diagnosed during pregnancy through an oral glucose tolerance test. Between 5.5 and 8.8% of pregnant women develop GDM in Australia. Risk factors for GDM include a family history of diabetes, increasing maternal age, obesity and being a member of a community or ethnic group with a high risk of developing type 2 diabetes. While the carbohydrate intolerance usually returns to normal after the birth, the mother has a significant risk of developing permanent diabetes while the baby is more likely to develop obesity and impaired glucose tolerance and/or diabetes later in life. Self-care and dietary changes are essential in treatment.

Causes Of Diabetes

Diabetes can be caused by too little insulin (a hormone produced by the pancreas to control blood sugar), resistance to insulin, or both.

To understand diabetes, it is important to first understand the normal process of food metabolism. Several things happen when food is digested:
A sugar called glucose enters the bloodstream. Glucose is a source of fuel for the body.
An organ called the pancreas makes insulin. The role of insulin is to move glucose from the bloodstream into muscle, fat, and liver cells, where it can be used as fuel.

People with diabetes have high blood sugar. This is because their pancreas does not make enough insulin or their muscle, fat, and liver cells do not respond to insulin normally, or both.

There are three major types of diabetes:

Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in childhood. The body makes little or no insulin, and daily injections of insulin are needed to sustain life.

Type 2 diabetes is far more common than type 1 and makes up most of all cases of diabetes. It usually occurs in adulthood. The pancreas does not make enough insulin to keep blood glucose levels normal, often because the body does not respond well to the insulin. Many people with type 2 diabetes do not know they have it, although it is a serious condition. Type 2 diabetes is becoming more common due to the growing number of older Americans, increasing obesity, and failure to exercise.

Gestational diabetes is high blood glucose that develops at any time during pregnancy in a woman who does not have diabetes.

Diabetes affects more than 20 million Americans. About 54 million Americans have prediabetes. There are many risk factors for diabetes, including:

1. A parent, brother, or sister with diabetes

2. Obesity

3. Age greater than 45 years

3. Some ethnic groups (particularly African Americans, Native Americans, Asians, Pacific Islanders, and Hispanic Americans)

4. Gestational diabetes or delivering a baby weighing more than 9 pounds

5. High blood pressure

6. High blood levels of triglycerides (a type of fat molecule)

7. High blood cholesterol level

8. Not getting enough exercise

The American Diabetes Association recommends that all adults over age 45 be screened for diabetes at least every 3 years. A person at high risk should be screened more often.

How To Prevent Or Control Diabetes

Diabetes prevention is proven, possible, and powerful. Studies show that people at high risk for type 2 diabetes can prevent or delay the onset of the disease by losing 5 to 7 percent of their body weight. You can do it by eating healthier and getting 30 minutes of physical activity 5 days a week. In other words: you don't have to knock yourself out to prevent diabetes. The key is: small steps that lead to big rewards. Learn more about your risk for developing type 2 diabetes and the small steps you can take to delay or prevent the disease and live a long, healthy life.

Small Steps. Big Rewards. Your GAME PLAN to Prevent

Watch Your Diet

There is no one magic diet that works for everyone. Nor is there a single diet that works best for one individual over a long time. Pay attention to your genetics, and to your ethnic group's traditional foods. If you are African American, that does not mean overcooked vegetables or pork rinds. Such garbage came on the nutritional scene only recently, and is not a true ethnic food. The same is true for Italians who overdose on pepperoni pizza. Being Italian myself as, well as having enjoyed fantastic African cuisine, I can tell you there is a lot more to these diets than the recent introductions often associated with these cultural groups.

Except for Eskimos and a few other highly specialized ethnic groups, all diets must adhere to the same few macronutrient rules. For example:

Eliminate as many processed carbohydrates as possible.

Don't eat carbohydrates 2 hours before bedtime.

Balance your fat/carbos/protein in a roughly 30-40-30 ratio (this is a guideline, not a hard and fast rule--it doesn't work for everyone).

Eat at least 5 or 6 small meals a day.

Always eat a high-protein breakfast.

Did you know that the peanuts offered on airlines are LESS fattening than the fat-free pretzels? It's true. Stay away from fat-free foods--they make your insulin levels do a yo-yo, and that makes you put on fat. Yuck. Worse, it sets the stage for adult-onset diabetes.

Do NOT eat white flour, bleached flour, enriched flour, or any other kind of wheat flour that is not whole wheat. The glycemic effects of such flours will work against you. Eat whole grain flours, and try to get a variety. Amaranth and soy are two good flours. Eat oat groats instead of oatmeal. In short, get your grains in the least-processed form you can. This holds true for everyone, regardless of genetics (unless you have a malabsorption problem). This one "trick" will help you keep your insulin level on an even keel, and that is paramount to diabetes prevention and management.

What also holds true for everyone is: drink lots of water! Fill a gallon jug twice a day, and make sure you drink all of it. Once you get as lean as you want to be, cut back to a single gallon if you want to. For added fat loss, drink chilled (but not super cold) water. Sodas do not count. Such beverages are extremely unhealthy, for reasons I won't cover here. However, I will say that if you want to get osteoporosis, soft drinks are for you. Soft drinks make for soft bones.

Make sure to eat at least 5 or 6 small meals a day, rather than one big one. Doing so levels out your insulin and your blood sugar. Forget about that full feeling. If you find yourself overeating out of anxiety or boredom, fix the underlying problem -- don't add to it by poor eating!

PRE-DIABETE
