Patients suffering in uncontrolled diabetes have extreme thirst for water. The patient also loses weight in spite of being hungry and eating heartily. At the same time he excretes abnormally large quantities of urine because the nutriment from his foods is constantly draining away. This lowers his resistance to infections, and he may suffer from chronic skin trouble, as well as being tired and weak. Cuts and bruises heal slowly, if at all.

Many diabetics do not have such marked conditions, for in the early stages the symptoms are less evident, but unless properly treated, they may go on to much more serious trouble. The younger the patient, the more serious the disease, and usually the more rapid its progress and the greater the need for immediate treatment.

Diabetic patients must understand that they have a disorder for their entire life. In most cases, there is no cure for diabetes. The patient must learn to live with his disability. He must know the pitfalls and how to avoid them. The two most serious dangers are diabetic ketoacidosis which results from too little insulin or too much food, or perhaps the presence of an infection, and insulin shock which arises from taking too much insulin or too little food.

Common sign of the diabetes are the 3Ps which include the polyuria, polydypsia, polyphagia and weight loss is common. The patient may also manifest to have blurred vision, and slow wound healing. They have also signs of infections such as pyorrhea (periodontal infections), UTI, vasculitis, cellulites, furucles, carbuncles, and vaginal infections. Some patient may also manifest neuropathy, retinopathy and nephropathy.

The major signs in patient with type 1 DM are hyperglycemia there is high blood glucose because from reduced cell uptake and increased release from liver. Glycosuria is also common from high blood levels of glucose. Polyuria which results from hyperglycemia that causes reduction of renal water reabsorption. Weakness, fatigue and weight loss are caused by disordered protein and carbohydrate metabolism. Ketoacidosis is the result of excessive lipid energy metabolism and other metabolic derangement.
