Diabetic proximal neuropathy is only one of many diabetic neuropathies. Like all the others it is the result of long-term high blood sugar, but it is not as well known as the numbness and tingling of fingers and toes that is called peripheral neropathy. Nearly every type 2 diabetic will experience it.

But not everyone with type 2 diabetes has the symptoms of muscle wasting and weakness that is diabetic proximal neuropathy. This condition is also called diabetic amyotrophy (myo- for muscles and -trophy for breaking down), and it happens after years and years of too much glucose in your blood.

The Symptoms of Diabetic Proximal Neuropathy

Diabetic amyotrophy starts with pain in the muscles of the thighs, hips, buttocks or legs. In rare cases it also affects the shoulders, but wherever it shows up, the pain is usually on only one side, or on one side more than the other.

If the cause of the muscle wasting is diabetic nerve disease, it is always in older adults who have had diabetes for a while. Type 2 diabetes has usually been damaging the blood vessels that supply nerves with oxygen, destroying the nerves slowly over time.

The effect is weakness in your legs, being unable to stand up from a chair without help. There is loss of knee and ankle reflexes too. That's one reason doctors check your reflexes at each physical by gently tapping your knee and ankle joints with a small hammer.

If diabetic proximal neuropathy continues, the result is quadriparesis, or weakness in the arms and legs. That's why it is called muscle wasting. There are other causes for this disease, such as Lou Gehrig's disease or muscular dystrophy.

But in type 2 diabetes the cause is peripheral nerve disease. Insulin resistance in the cells leads to high blood sugar that weakens veins and arteries, as well as high insulin levels that lead to inflammatory symptoms. For a long time those are hidden problems, but after a while the symptoms of pain and weakness rise up, and we are forced to face diabetic amyotrophy.

How Is Diabetic Proximal Neuropathy Diagnosed?

Doctors have tests available to them - nerve conduction studies and needle electromyography are two of them - but usually the tests aren't needed. It is easy for your doctor to see the symptoms of amyotrophy by use of reflex testing and observing how you stand and walk.

The diabetic neuropathies your doctor sees every day make diagnosing very easy. It's the treatment and prevention that concerns them the most, and it's good to know there are things that can be done.

The Treatment

Diabetic proximal neuropathy is halted and reversed by controlling your blood sugar. Using good eating habits is a great start for lowering your blood sugar. Then there is physical exercise that not only aids blood sugar control but strengthens the muscles and stimulates nerve growth.

There are medications for helping control blood sugar, too, but you need to be aware of the side effects of each diabetic medicine so you can weigh that against the positive results. You can also look into medications for nerve pain, most of which are similar to the things doctors prescribe for depression. That's because those medicines have been found effective against nerve pain.

What that means to me is if you can stay out of the depression that plagues diabetics and work on good mental health, nerve pain will be less damaging. Avoiding harmful habits like smoking, and lowering your levels of stress will also aid you in the fight against neuropathies.

If diabetic proximal neuropathy has made it difficult to get around there are good physical therapies for bringing feeling back in your legs and building muscles that have weakened. For a type 2 diabetic there is always hope because, unlike other wasting diseases, this condition responds to intervention with exercise, weight loss and physical therapy. You can slow and reverse the course of diabetic amyotrophy.

I know how hard it is to face pain. I'm afraid I don't do it very well. But if we will go ahead and walk through the pain we will get stronger and feel better. It's the only way to keep those peripheral nerve disease symptoms from taking over our lives. Let's do it.

Type 2 diabetes is the epidemic that grows with ignorance. A disease that can be completely avoided with a minimal of diet and nutrition education. Most people hardly have the attention or interest to finish their daily news paper, so trawling through countless chapters on vitamins, food groups, bio chemistry etc etc will hardly help and for good reason. The simplest theories work the best.

So, Down to basics.

Type 2 diabetes symptoms and complications. You have more than likely read these a thousand times but lets refresh.

Frequent need for urination

Continual thirst, day and night

Blurred vision

Poor healing

Tiredness

Absolutely no energy

Sticky teeth sensation

There are many more but these are pretty much the main type 2 diabetes symptoms and complications.

Now the real nuts and bolts of this article, how to manage and prevent type 2 diabetes.

The content relating to the above statement is the same for both management and prevention. Obviously, putting this knowledge into action before any signs of type 2 diabetes shows up, will go a long way to ever having to worry about developing the disease. As always, prevention is far better than cue.

Keep carbohydrate intake low, and only eat from the low glycemic index range.

Eat no refined carbohydrates or sugars what so ever.

No altered fats, (hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oil, no trans fats, no cheap vegetable oil or margarine).

Use healthy un spoiled plant and nut based fats and oils.

Include omega 3 in your diet

No deep fried foods.

No eating past 5-6 pm.

Eat plenty of different coloured fresh veg.

Diabetes is one of dangerous illness which is very difficult to treat. Most of people who are suffered from diabetes only can keep their glucose in stable if they do not want to get involve with serious problem caused by diabetes. Basically, diabetes is caused because insulin in your body does not work properly in which insulin is acted as a glucose controller across the cells within your body. The basic term of diabetes is the highest level of glucose in your body from the normal glucose level. Moreover, there are several types of diabetes and it determines the level of dangerous. There are three levels on diabetes which are pre diabetes, diabetes type 1 and diabetes type 2. Pre diabetes is a condition in which the person is already has high level of glucose but he or she is not diagnosed as people with diabetes yet.

The most dangerous diabetes is diabetes type 2. The symptom is various and sometimes you do not realize if you are suffered from diabetes. Several general diabetes symptoms which you need to know such as getting thirsty more than normal condition, getting tired easily and also getting hungry. One way to prevent you from diabetes is changing your lifestyle and of course you need to change it into healthy lifestyle to keep your health well. First, you can take diet program for diabetes. In this case, you need to learn about what kind of foods which you can eat and foods which not allowed. Of course, it has to keep your daily nutrition otherwise you will suffer from different illness. If you feel uncomfortable with your condition, you have to check your condition to the doctor right away especially if you have the same diabetes symptoms. Second, besides keeping your eating habit you have to stop your bad habits such as smoking and drinking alcohol. Third, you need to keep you health by doing exercise regularly and avoid more sugar and also salt. You need to do these kinds of treatment to prevent your condition worst especially preventing you from diabetes type 2.

For your information, diabetes type 2 can leads you to several serious illnesses including stroke. Stroke is a condition in which you have high blood pressure. Furthermore, stroke happens when your blood vessel ruptures and blood cannot reach your brain. This is the reason why people with stroke disease are able to move several parts of their body. Basically, it is caused because their brain can control their body because their vessels are damage. The way to reduce this kind of risk is by checking your blood pressure regularly. Again, you need to keep your health by eating healthy food and do exercise. People with overweight problem tend to have a risk of suffering from diabetes and stroke. Of course, the next solution is by reducing your weight by tight diet program.

Are you tired of wondering if you have diabetes? Do you want to figure out how to stop adult onset diabetes cold?

Ten years ago that might have sounded like a foolish question. I have a friend whose waking blood glucose is high and a decade ago she would have been told to brace herself. Not any more. Today, you can reasonably expect to push back diabetes.

What can you do?

I'll give you three great techniques for turning back diabetes and one serious warning at the end:

1. Check your numbers and accept them. Adult onset diabetes symptoms are pretty black or white these days. In fact, you can check. Get your hemoglobin A1c done by doctor.

Or measure your blood glucose yourself. If your fasting blood glucose (not your waking glucose reading, that's different) is 126 mg/dl or higher, or your after-eating blood glucose is over 200 mg/dl on at least two occasions - you got it.

Don't fudge, don't fight. Go into action.

2. Keep exercising.

There's a myth going around these days that diabetics or pre diabetics should cut back on exercise. Nothing could be further from the truth. Careful diet and religious exercise is more effective than the most popular diabetes drug (metformin).

Get out and walk your 5,000 steps today.

3. Have your foot doctor cut your toenails.

I'm serious. Stop cutting your own nails. First, it's too easy to cut yourself on the feet (which can be dangerous if you do have adult onset diabetes). And second, it means you have to get a foot doctor and see him or her and they have to look closely at your feet regularly.

Warning: You might not catch the signs of adult onset diabetes before it kicks in. In a study published in 2007, fully 6,600 of 15,000 diabetes suffers reported no outward symptoms.

Let that sink in so you can appreciate how dangerous that is.  Over 40% of the diabetes sufferers in the study didn't recognize they had any symptoms.

There are numerous pre diabetes symptoms, which should be detected earlier in order to prevent from diabetes. Most people are suffering from this deadly disease. The most common form of this disorder is Type 2 diabetes. They are spreading at a very high speed and mostly attacking adults while Type 1 is mostly attacking the younger people.

When our pancreas fails to produce insulin, it cause high blood sugar levels and leads to Type 1 diabetes and when our pancreas produces ineffective insulin due to old age, it leads to type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes can also be a genetic problem. In order to prevent the side effects like blindness and rotting, we should try to detect them through their pre diabetes symptoms.

Can We Really Predict Diabetes Early And Prevent It?

Yes, we can easily predict this problem by looking at the pre diabetes symptoms. Most of the symptoms are similar in both Type1 and Type 2.

Feeling Thirsty: Despite of gulping down jars of water you feel thirsty. This unquenchable thirst is a regular pre diabetes symptoms.

Frequent urination: When there is too much glucose in your blood, the urination becomes more frequent. If you observe this type of change in your body then we should immediately consult a doctor. It can be considered as most vital pre diabetes symptoms after which patients need to to consult doctors immediately for further checkup as this disorder can turn into deadly disease at any moment.

Weight loss: When your pancreas stops producing insulin, your immune system gets affected. Your body constantly needs energy; the cells in your pancreas starts breaking down your muscles and eventually you lose weight. This weight loss is more noticeable in type 1 diabetes. This one of the main symptoms to detect this deadly disease.

There are other symptoms such as dry and itchy skin, blurred vision and tiredness. Your body also experiences weakness before the advent of this deadly disease because of low insulin production in your pancreas.

Hyperglycemia is the medical term for high blood sugar. In most cases, hyperglycemia goes hand in hand with diabetes. However, there are other causes that can be found for the condition. The definition of what is considered a high amount of sugar often varies by the medical establishment.

In most cases, it is considered any level that is over 180 on a blood glucose test. This level would be high if you have been fasting for at least four hours, as levels this high can be common after a meal. There are specific causes and treatments for non-diabetic hyperglycemia.

Many eating disorders, such as bulimia, can lead to hyperglycemia. In this case, the high amount of sugar found in the blood would be most commonly found during the binging phase of the process. With this disease, most people will binge eat, which is the process of consuming large amounts of food in a short period.

In most cases, the foods chosen are high carbohydrate foods and simple sugars. These foods can quickly raise the blood glucose level as the body will not have enough time to produce a high enough insulin level. In this case, the best option for preventing hyperglycemia is to get a handle on the eating disorder and this is usually no small task.

However, the hyperglycemia is a direct result of the disorder. If you are facing this condition, you need to eat small meals through out the day to get your levels back under control. Contact your physician for help with management.

Hyperglycemia can often be found in people who have an infection or inflammation due to an illness. When a person is ill, the body will release endogenous catecholamines, as well as other hormones that can raise levels of sugar in their blood. For this reason, it is possible for normally healthy people to have high blood glucose level.

This is why no one should ever be diagnosed with diabetes based on one blood sugar level. It is possible for one high reading to be a product of illness and stress on the body. This condition is usually detected by your physician during blood tests.

In this case, it is often hard to determine whether the symptoms you experience are from the flu or from raised blood glucose levels. This is why you should seek medical treatment for help in determining what the issue is. If you doctor does discover that your illness has caused a rise in blood sugar levels, they might suggest insulin for a short period or you may need to adjust your diet while you are ill.

It is very possible for illness, stress, and certain habits, to have an impact on blood glucose levels. These levels do not always mean a person has diabetes or that they will develop it later on. Your doctor should determine if you are experiencing Hyperglycemia due to other factors or if this is an ongoing condition that deserves a diabetes diagnosis.

There are tests that can measure your blood sugar levels over several months to help determine if this is an isolated event or an ongoing condition. Only your doctor can help make this determination.

Canine chronic bladder infections refer to those ailments that keep coming back time after time. This is not the same as those classified as acute. An acute infection comes and then goes away after proper treatment has been given. When the problem returns, even after treatment has been given, the ailment becomes known as a chronic bladder infection. These chronic bladder infection in canines can run from simply annoying to the serious.

In many cases the reasons for the return of the problem is due to the urinary tract not being able to fight off harmful bacteria. Once the bacteria sets-up in the tract, and this means anywhere along the entire urinary system, it can produce irritation which leads to inflammation, and this inflammation is one of the main symptoms in chronic bladder infection in canines.

There can be other causes as well for the canine chronic bladder infections. Some of the more common causes include bladder stones, diabetes, physical defects in the urinary tract that allow urine to pool, kidney infection, cancer, and tumors. All of these, as you might imagine, require a diagnosis from your vet.

Another cause of canine chronic bladder infections is when pets are prescribed antibiotics and the owner does not continue with the medications until the prescribed end of treatment. This often happens when an ill dog begins to look and act better and the owner assumes the problem is resolved. It is important to always continue the antibiotics until the full course has been reached, regardless of how well your dog begins to look.

Canine chronic bladder infections can also be a result of the dog being overweight. Excessive weight can also be linked to diabetes and joint pain or arthritis. As you can see, chronic bladder infection in canines requires a visit to your vet to determine the underlying cause.

While all of this may sound disheartening, the good news is most causes of canine chronic bladder infections can be diagnosed with some simple lab tests. A complete urine test will identify what types of bacteria are present, if any. Blood tests may also be called for, and in some cases, X-rays may be needed. X-rays can be especially useful if the problem is associated with stones. In some cases, stones may be too large to pass naturally, and the vet may need to schedule surgery in order to get them out. Stone large enough to block the urinary passage can be very dangerous, even life-threatening.

If your dog has a past history of urinary tract problems that never seem to go away, you should consider the possibility that he or she has canine chronic bladder infection issues. Assuming your veterinarian doesn't find any structural issues such as a blockage or narrowing of any of the tubes that carry urine, you might want to consider changes in diet and supplementation with natural remedies. Special urinary diets such as Hill's Prescription Diet u/d are formulated to help the body generate urine with the PH balance needed to naturally fight bacteria. You might also might consider a switch to a canned dog food. These foods have 80% more moisture than dry and should cause an increase in urination. A dog's stomach is sensitive, and your dog may not like dietary change, so gradually introduce any new food by mixing new and old together until the transition is complete. This should take approximately 7 days.

Natural remedies are also something that can't hurt and possibly worth a try. Chronic bladder infection in canines can be prevented if the bacteria never gets to take hold in the first place. Like dietary approaches, several herbs are known to support the urinary system. Several products on the market combine many of these ingredients such as Arctostaphylos uva urs. Discuss natural remedies for canine chronic bladder infections with your veterinarian who can help you track progress and let you know if other patients have had success with this approach.

Beyond all else, make sure your dog that is suffering from canine chronic bladder infections is getting enough fresh water. By drinking more often, your dog will urinate more, which will help to keep the urinary tract free of canine bladder stone causing crystals, bacteria and fungus.

Almost everyone knows someone with diabetes. From 1980 through 2004, less than one-quarter of a century, the total number of Americans with diabetes more than doubled! Estimates show that about six percent of the American population or about 18.2 million Americans suffer from this life-long illness. And about 6 million of those people haven't been diagnosed yet.

The causes of diabetes are well known. Diabetes is a condition that occurs when the body has lost its ability to regulate the levels of glucose (sugar) in the bloodstream. This is usually due to some interruption in the production of insulin. Insulin is the hormone in our body that lowers blood sugar levels. Without the hormone in our body, our blood sugar levels increase to dangerously high levels. Since all the organs in our body rely on a steady supply of glucose so they can function properly, any disruption blood sugar levels can have dire consequences. Diabetes often leads to blindness, heart and blood vessel disease, stroke, kidney failure, amputations, and nerve damage.

There are two major types of diabetes - Type 1 which is often called juvenile diabetes and Type 2 which is often called adult diabetes or adult-onset diabetes. Although diabetes can strike at any age, Type 1 diabetes usually strikes children and young adults. In Type 1 diabetes, cells in the pancreas called beta cells, these are the ones that make insulin to control blood sugar levels in our body, do not function. So in order to maintain or manage blood sugar levels, people with Type 1 diabetes must inject insulin or have it delivered by a small pump into their body. In effect, they must supply the insulin that the beta cells in their pancreas are not supplying. Type 1 diabetes accounts for about five to ten percent of all diagnosed cases of diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is more common than Type 1. Type 2 diabetes generally affects adults. Type 2 adult diabetes usually begins as the body starts to resist the effects of insulin - sometimes called insulin resistance. The body just doesn't use the insulin it makes effectively or efficiently. This inefficiency puts extra demands on the pancreas where insulin is made by the beta cells. Over time, the pancreas and beta cells can't keep up and gradually begin to lose the ability to make insulin at all.

The American Diabetes Association estimates that nearly 6 million Americans are currently living with undiagnosed diabetes. The effects of an adult with diabetes may first appear as problems with their vision, nerves, kidney failure, heart attack, or stroke. It isn't until these life threatening conditions occur that they realize they have been living with the chronic disease of diabetes. The symptoms of an adult with diabetes and the symptoms of a child with diabetes are recognizable: excessive thirst, craving for sweet foods, passing urine frequently, tiredness and weight loss. Although the onset of Adult Type 2 diabetes is gradual, the onset of Juvenile Type 1 diabetes is usually very rapid and sometimes life threatening when they first appear.

Why would anyone develop Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes? Can diabetes be passed down? The answer is maybe. Genetics and other family histories are being examined to determine whether Type 1 or Type 2 are hereditary, but the cause of Type 2 diabetes is more associated with lifestyle habits. Type 2 diabetes is often seen in people who don't exercise, are obese, have a poor diet, and lead stress-filled lives.

Diabetes is ranked as the sixth leading cause of death in the United States but may be underestimated. The reason is that more than 60 percent of those with diabetes often die as a result of heart disease or stroke. And it is the heart disease or stroke that is listed as the cause of death. Because the causes of Type 2 diabetes are associated with lifestyle habits, there may be a NATURAL TREATMENT for Type 2 Adult Diabetes. There may be a natural treatment for the CONTROL of diabetes.

Here are three natural lifestyle habits to prevent, control, and treat diabetes.

1. Maintain a healthy weight. 90 percent of all people diagnosed with diabetes are overweight. According to the American Diabetes Association, even 5 to 10 percent reduction in body weight can result in a tremendous reduction in the risk or severity of diabetes. For most people, that's only a loss of 10-20 pounds.

2. Exercise. Physical activity can lower your blood sugar (glucose) and help insulin work better for your body. That means your body is less susceptible to the development of diabetes. If you're trying to lose weight as a natural way to prevent, control, or treat your diabetes, a combination of physical activity and wise food choice can help you reach your target.

3. Nutrition. Eating habits contribute significantly to the current increase in diabetes. Over the past 50 years, people have been eating more and more carbohydrates and sugar-filled foods. Eating a lot of carbohydrates each day puts stress on the pancreas which must work harder to maintain blood sugar levels. As the pancreas degrades, and you continue to eat the carbohydrates, you make yourself prone to Type 2 diabetes.

Maintaining a healthy weight, regular exercise, and proper nutrition are important. They are three natural lifestyle habits that you can do today to prevent, control and treat diabetes. Eating healthy and getting the proper nutrition means a balanced diet, drinking plenty of water and taking a nutritional supplement. Taking a nutritional supplement on a regular basis ensures you are getting all the vitamins and minerals your body needs, including your pancreas, to rebuild, regenerate, and operate at peak performance levels.

Do you suffer from diabetes? You should then be concerned about kidney disease. Why? Because over 43% of those who develop kidney disease or failure is due to uncontrolled diabetes! Well you may be saying that your diabetes is controlled. But there are many erroneous concepts about what it really means to be "controlled" in diabetes. I will get in to that later. For now it is important for you to understand that Diabetes and Kidney disease are intimately related.

If You Have Diabetes, the possibility of you getting kidney disease is very high especially if you are on insulin.

Diabetes and Kidney Disease - What is the connection?

Diabetes can cause kidney disease for many reasons. One of the reasons is obvious. The body is not transporting sugar into the cells because insulin is not working. Insulin is the hormone produced by the pancreas necessary for sugar to enter the cells. Since the body is not responding to insulin, sugar builds up in the blood resulting in Diabetes.

This problem is called insulin resistance. Now all this sugar that the body is not using has to be eliminated through the kidneys. Normally, very little or no sugar should be in the urine. But since there is too much in the blood the kidney has to filter it out. This function of the kidney protects the blood from really getting high in sugar.

After many years of filtering this high sugar content in the blood makes the kidneys get weak and finally they start to fail.

Another reason for kidney failure is glycation. Glycation is when the high sugar levels alter the tissues in the kidneys. Sugar is added to the kidney structure making them incapable to function as they usually do.

This is the same reason why diabetes also damages the eyes, the heart, the nerves of the lower extremities and the arteries. Glycation is the reason for most of the complications that occur in Diabetes.

How Controlled Should be Your Diabetes To Prevent Kidney Disease

Many doctors will tell their patients to maintain their sugar levels between 120 and 130. Especially if they are using insulin. This is incorrect. If your sugar levels are over 110 mg/dl your kidneys will damage. And you will suffer the complications of diabetes.

You must maintain normal sugar levels at all time to help prevent kidney damage. The optimum level should be 80 to 110. If you are out of this range then you are in trouble.

Where are you right now?

• Has your doctor been noticing that your kidney blood test is starting to show some signs of early kidney disease?
• Did you know that when the kidney test starts showing abnormalities that your kidney has already been suffering for a big while?
• It doesn't happen overnight. If you are showing borderline elevations in your creatinine and BUN blood test then the damage has already taken place!

Now maybe you have no signs of kidney damage now. And your blood tests are ok. Do you want to wait for your kidneys to damage to do something about it? I don't think so! Some things you are do are:

1. Eat a large green salad at least twice per day.
2. Eat fruits that are low glycemic. Which means they don't turn in to sugar really fast. Low glycemic fruits include apples and pears.
3. Eat starches that are low glycemic and in their natural state such as sweet potatoes.
4. Drink large quantities of water
5. Don't eat late at night
6. Do not eat after six. It is better to reduce insulin intake rather that have to eat more to keep your sugar from going to low.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. There is no way around it. You must change your life style an exercise to control your diabetes and prevent kidney disease.

Learn how to prevent diabetes by following 2 simple steps if you have been diagnosed as a borderline diabetic. Even those who have already been diagnosed with the condition can benefit from implementing these simple steps in order to lessen the effects of this full blown serious health condition. Since type 2 diabetes is something that you will most likely have for the rest of your life after you have become diagnosed, it is essential to do all that you can to prevent the health condition from occurring. Here are two basic strategies on how to prevent diabetes.

Exercise

According to the American Diabetes Association, exercise plays a key role in type 2 diabetes prevention. You should aim to exercise thirty minutes at least three to five days a week. It is important to choose activities you enjoy doing which can range from brisk walking, dancing or swimming. The key is to find an activity that you enjoy doing so that you will be able to remain active throughout your life. Remember that 3,500 calories equal a pound so you will need to count that amount within your daily intake. Most people can do this through a combination of cutting calories from their diet and burning off other calories through exercise.

Healthy Diet

In addition to exercising, it is necessary for you to follow a well balanced diet. Not only should you be aiming to lose weight, but you should also commit to eating more healthily. Avoid red meats and opt for poultry or fish instead which can significantly help prevent type 2 diabetes. Be sure to incorporate lots of healthy fruits and vegetables into your diet, but make sure that you aren't choosing ones which are high in starch. Potatoes, corn, and peas are not the best choices for borderline diabetics. Eliminate soda, sweetened fruit juices, and junk foods from your diet.

It is important to do all that you can to prevent diabetes before it is a permanent condition. Whether you have been diagnosed as a borderline diabetic or you know that you have a family history of type 2 diabetes, the best thing that you can do is to put all of your effort into preventing this condition. Taking insulin shots for the rest of your life and experiencing some of the other problems that are commonly associated with the condition can be easily prevented. Understanding how to prevent diabetes and then permanently adding these two steps to your everyday regimen can make a real difference in whether or not you live a healthy, active life free from diabetes.

Having gestational diabetes during pregnancy can mean that too much sugar is passed to your developing baby, increasing their risk of becoming diabetic later in life. Following a well planned gestational diabetes diet can reduce this risk by controlling the level of sugar in your blood, and reducing the amount that is passed to your baby via the placenta.

There are other issues that can arise from your baby receiving too much sugar. The main problem will be that your baby could grow exceptionally large, causing difficulties with delivery. Overweight babies have a much higher chance of being born by cesarean section and experiencing birth complications than normal weight babies.

What causes gestational diabetes?

Gestational diabetes is a temporary form of diabetes that develops during pregnancy, but usually disappears after the baby is born. The condition can develop when the mother's body is unable to produce enough insulin to meet the increasing needs of their developing baby. Insulin levels can also be affected by pregnancy hormones, which can limit its production.

Controlling your condition with a good gestational diabetes diet plan is crucial for the health of mother and baby. Nutritionist Bridget Swinney says;

"When large amounts of glucose accumulate in your blood, it means that your cells aren't getting the fuels they need. High blood sugar can be harmful for you and your developing baby, so it is important to try to control it".

Consult a dietician to put together your gestational diabetes diet plan

Your gestational diabetes diet plan will depend on a number of factors so it is important to consult a professional to ensure the wellbeing of you and your baby. Your diet plan will be based on the following issues:

a. How many calories you need each day

b. Your height and weight

c. Your level of activity

d. The particular needs of your baby

e. Your level of glucose intolerance

Another important issue in creating your gestational diabetes diet plan is to include foods that you actually like. Any mother will know that pregnancy is a time when food can provide enormous comfort, and trying to stick to a strict diabetes diet that does not include foods you enjoy will be very difficult.

Here are some general tips for creating a gestational diabetes diet plan:

1. Eat small meals and snacks throughout the day instead of big meals that will suddenly increase your blood sugar levels. Towards the end of your pregnancy small meals will be more comfortable for you to eat anyway.

2. Don't skip meals, and make sure you eat breakfast, even if you have morning sickness, as your blood sugar levels are at their most irregular first thing in the morning.

3. General pregnancy nutrition advice may recommend fruit juice and flavored teas. These should not form part of your gestational diabetes diet plan as they can increase your blood sugar very quickly.
