Diabetes is the body's inability to process blood sugar. This has many implications for the person with diabetes. First, blood sugar is the primary source of energy that allows the body to function. It also means that high blood sugar levels change the consistency of the blood and can have major complications, if left untreated, such as retinopathy and diabetic neuropathy. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes and is characterized by insulin resistance. Insulin is the hormone that lowers the blood sugar level. A person with type 2 diabetes are insulin resistant and needs ongoing treatment. This article will discuss what is the treatment for diabetes, particularly type 2 diabetes.

In the treatment of type 2 diabetes is often seen as a three-step approach depending on the tolerance to insulin.

The first phase revolves around education. Most people who buy type 2 diabetes must be re-educated on a number of things, including eating and exercise habits, check their weight and lifestyle changes that will occur as a result of the condition.

They will learn that the diet must include carbohydrates 55-60%. The best carbohydrates should be complex carbohydrates such as pasta, polenta and potatoes.

Are expected to limit protein intake by about 30% and their fat intake to 15% of their total energy intake.

Need to eat regular meals, about 6 a day, but in smaller quantities than before they had diabetes.

They should aim to lose weight like this make their body more sensitive to insulin and minimise diabetic complications and the need for medications.

If the patient is able to implement a diabetic diet, losing weight and exercising regularly which does not need to take the medicine.

Otherwise the second phase involves taking medication to make the body more sensitive to insulin.

For obese patients the drug metformin is prescribed as sensitize the tissues to insulin. For thin people, sulphonylureas are used as promotes insulin secretion. If the condition worsens, both drugs in combination can be prescribed.

The final phase of treatment is that insulin replacement therapy is needed. Depending on the individual patient, soluble, acts fast or long-acting insulin may be used. Ultimately, the patient will have to take insulin by injection and some form of medication which acts as a hypoglycemic agent.

Early treatment of 2 type diabetic aims at changing a person's lifestyle, so they are not dependent on medications or insulin replacement therapy however this is not always possible, especially with older people.
