"What Causes Diabetes?" the answer is not clearly known. There is still a mystery in it. The science even today is unable to explain that why some people have diabetes and others have not. Still some of the factors that contribute to diabetes have been identified. These factors are considered to be the risk factors of diabetes. This means those who have these factors are at an increased risk of developing diabetes.

Inherited Traits; There are some genes which pass from one generation to another. These genes may cause the person to inherit this disease. The chances of being diabetic if it is inherited vary with the closeness of blood relationship. For example if the mother of a person is diabetic, he has 2 to 3 % chance of getting this disease. If the father of a person is diabetic then the chances are comparatively more. The risk is even more if both the parents are diabetic.

Age; The diabetes can take place at any age but its probability increases with the increasing age.

Poor diet; Improper nutrition, low fiber and protein intake, high intake of refined processed foods increase the risks of diabetes.

Obesity; Obesity or being overweight is also one of the leading causes of diabetes.

Stress; Any physical injury or emotional disturbance is also considered to be the cause of diabetes.

Drugs; Seroquel, Geodon, Zyprexa, Clozaril and Risperdal are the drugs that are known to induce the diabetic condition.

Sex; Diabetes is more found in elder males. It is frequent in those female who are suffering from PCOS.

Serum Lipid; High cholesterol level and triglycerides are also related to high glucose levels.

One can prevent or delay the diabetic condition by eliminating the controllable factors.
