Most of the time, borderline diabetes or simply pre diabetes has no symptoms or signs. Acanthosis nigricans is a pre diabetes symptom characterized as the darkened areas of skin. This common sign affect the areas in the armpits, knuckles, elbows and the neck.

The following are some of the classic red flags of type 2 diabetes mellitus that you should watch out:

1. Blurry vision
2. frequent urination
3. increased thirst
4. fatigue

See a doctor if you are concerned about diabetes milletus or if you happen to notice a particular pre diabetes symptom or sign such as frequent urination, blurry vision, increased thirst and fatigue. Ask your doctor regarding blood glucose screening if you have any of the following risk factors for borderline diabetes:

1. you are aged over 45 years old
2. you are overweight, with a body mass index above 25
3. you have a family history of type 2 diabetes
4. you are currently inactive
5. you have a high blood pressure
6. you have polycystic ovary syndrome
7. you are Hispanic, Asian-American, African-American, American Indian or a Pacific Islander
8. you regularly sleep 5 and a half hours at night or even fewer
9. your HDL or high-density lipoprotein cholesterol is below 35 mg/dL or triglyceride level is above 250 mg/dL
10. when you were pregnant or gave birth to a baby who weighed more than 9 lbs, you have developed gestational diabetes

Early pre diabetes symptom although alarming, can also be misleading. Keep in mind that prevention is always better than cure. If you are currently exhibiting signs, it is a better idea to have them checked out. In doing so, it will either help you to change your lifestyle before a full blown diabetes mellitus takes hold or put your mind at rest.
