Diabetes mellitus is a disease which causes the body to produce less insulin leaving too much glucose in the blood. Insulin is used to help the body's cells absorb the glucose and convert it to energy. Without insulin Diabetes leaves you drained , tried, fatigued, and without the energy required to perform basic everyday functions.

Diabetes is caused by the immune system attacking its own insulin producing beta cells or by the body not being able to use the insulin properly. This causes high levels of blood glucose which can lead to complications such as damaged blood vessels, heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, nerve damage, blindness, gum infections, and amputation due to loss of circulation and infection.

There are 3 types of diabetes;Type 1 Diabetes, Type 2 Diabetes, and Gestational Diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes , also known as insulin dependent diabetes, is diagnosed mainly in young adults or children . It is an autoimmune disease that causes the body's immune system to attack the pancreas' beta cells which produce insulin.

Type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disorder. It is the most commonly found form of diabetes. Anyone at any age can develop type 2 diabetes. It occurs 99% of the time in people who are obese and who do not have a healthy balanced diet.It is caused when the body develops an insulin resistance and doesn't use or absorb insulin properly.

Gestational Diabetes develops in pregnant women later into the pregnancy. It is caused by the body's pregnancy hormones causing an insulin resistance. It usually goes away after birth, but leaves the woman more likely to develop type 2 diabetes later in life.

Type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes can ,however, be prevented with physical activity and a balanced diet. People suffering from obesity who dieted and exercised, lost the weight and were 60% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes

A low fat low calorie high fiber diet is the best choice for anyone whether they have diabetes ,are trying to prevent it, or just want to get healthy.

Diabetes can be managed and kept under control with proper diet, nutrition, and exercise and with most cases proper medication. If left untreated it can and will lead to complications that can be crippling and even fatal.

Symptoms of the onset of diabetes include, fatigue, frequent urination, extreme thirst, lethargy, and sometimes sweet smelling breath. If you have these symptoms the best thing you can do is get tested for diabetes.
